Description of the position

The Head of ION Communications will be responsible for driving communications for ION in order to build internal and external understanding of, and engagement in, the business group and Nokia strategies, and deliver tangible business outcomes.

The Head of ION Communications will work in an agile fashion, managing a virtual team of communication professionals from centralized shared corporate communications services including media relations, internal communications and industry analyst relations, to create and deliver required communications materials and dialogues.

The role holder will ensure that the executive communications needs of the BG President are proactively met, with the support of the Head of ION Marketing where necessary.

The role is set up as a matrixed role. It has a direct functional reporting line into the VP of Corporate Communications to ensure alignment of communications across the whole of Nokia, consistent quality of deliverables, skills development and career progression. It takes its primary direction for planning purposes from the BG and is also embedded in the BG to ensure deep industry knowledge.

As this is a senior role, the role holder will also be expected to contribute to coaching and developing other members of the communications function and hold some responsibility for delivering the Corporate Communications strategy as well as the BG strategy.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Design, plan and deliver the ION President's and leadership teams communication requirements, building a strong working relationship with them and acting as trusted coach and counsel. ION President communications could include, but not be limited to, executive narrative, speeches and presentations. The role holder would work in conjunction with the ION Marketing Head to deliver content

  • Design, plan and deliver collaborative internal and transformational communications campaigns to engage all ION employees (and in some cases all-Nokia employees) on ION strategy, priorities and achievements.

  • Work with relevant LT and ION team members to translate objectives into business outcomes and engage employees to deliver

  • Convert sometimes complex technical, commercial and operational elements into compelling stories

  • Ensure innovative use of channels and content across ION and Nokia

  • Ensure ION communications are inspirational and encourage 2-way comms rather than being purely "broadcast"

  • Plan and manage the ION communications budget, where appropriate

  • Plan and manage available resources to deliver the ION communications plan. This will be done in an agile / virtual team fashion as per the explanation above

  • Develop shared working practices with other BG Comms heads and Corp Comms heads that enable alignment of resources on priority programs

  • Work closely with HR, Brand and other relevant functions to drive engagement throughout ION for Nokia's brand, culture, behaviors and values. Outcomes and plans will be driven in part by Change Map scores.

  • Work closely with external communications and IAR colleagues to develop and implement proactive media and industry analyst engagement. Ensure that all ION spokespeople are identified, trained, motivated and inspirational representatives of Nokia on the world stage

  • Develop and implement sensible measurement criteria for ION communications, that align to Corporate Communications and ION scorecards

  • Act as an inspirational internal company spokesperson

Required experience

10-15 years relevant communications experience, motivating and leading a diverse and distributed virtual team; global experience is a plus. Excellent written and verbal communications skills (in English) with a notable ability to convert complex ideas into compelling stories and business understanding are all critical in this role.
