  • The Head of Foundational Credit Risk Modeling will lead a team of about 9 risk professionals located in New York and Tampa. The scope of work includes and is organized as follows:

  • The Foundational Credit Risk Modeling team is responsible for life cycle development of fundamental models for loss likelihood and loss severity that support critical credit loss estimation for wholesale portfolios globally.

  • The wholesale foundational models support credit loss estimation for credit reserves, including the Loan Loss Reserves, CECL and IFRS9 Accounting Standards; internal and regulatory stress testing, including GSST and CCAR/DFAST; and regulatory risk capital, including Basel requirements.

  • The team also supports the organization and design of historical data on default events for wholesale portfolios needed to support the modeling efforts.

  • Clients include Business, Finance, Risk Managers, Fundamental Credit Risk, Internal Audit, and others within Citi, as well as external auditors and regulators.

  • Develop priorities for model development and related activities of the Team through engagement with partners in Risk, Finance and business units.

  • Enhance the application of analytics within the Risk organization particularly in wholesale portfolio risk assessment for internal and regulatory purposes.

  • Develop and implement industry-leading standards for model development and best-in-class analytics.

  • Engage with Model Risk Management leadership to ensure that QRS model development and documentation practices meet MRM guidelines.

  • Lead recruiting and training (including cross-training) initiatives in New York and Tampa.

  • In addition to managing the Team, the Head of Foundational Credit Risk Modeling is relied on as a subject matter expert on Basel, CCAR and other regulatory rules that affect the estimation of credit loss likelihood and loss severity for wholesale products; and is often sought out as a thought-partner on the use of loss models for different applications and analysis for the business.


  • MBA in Finance/Economics, Master's degree or PhD in a quantitative field (physics, mathematics, computer science, etc.), and 15 years of experience managing analytics teams in wholesale or retail credit risk modeling for loss likelihood and loss severity, and supporting business, auditors and regulators.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of banking and credit products, credit risk and related regulatory rules.

  • Experience leading advanced model development of wholesale or retail credit models of loss likelihood and loss severity, production implementation and business support.

  • Experience integrating state-of-the-art modeling tools, big-data platforms and environments that can lead to cutting-edge innovative solutions.

  • Experience in leading remote based teams is valuable but not essential.

  • Track record of successfully hiring and mentoring talent.

This role will have a matrix reporting relationship – directly to Credit Ratings and also to Quantitative Research. The Role The Managing Director of Credit Ratings Modeling will be responsible for leading a team tasked with building various types of credit rating models, such as default models, cashflow models, capital models, regression models covering asset classes of ABS, CMBS, Covered Bond, RMBS, Structured Credit, Corporates, Financial Institutions and Sovereigns. The Credit Ratings Modeling team will collaborate with members from the Credit Ratings, Credit Practices, Independent Review, Data and Technology teams to create class leading models that are as innovative as they are easy to understand in the marketplace. Often times this collaboration comes in the form of cross-functional teams assembled around a specific asset class, pulling together all skillsets required to quickly and effectively deliver a product the entire team can be proud of. Responsibilities • Manage, mentor and grow a team of globally diverse data scientists and quantitative modelers • Encourage, support and advocate for cross-functional credit rating model teams • Enable the credit ratings business to increase its visibility and standing in the debt capital markets using innovative credit models • Enhance internal controls to promote integrity of credit rating activities • Mitigate model risk by eliminating key man risk, manage a tightly controlled process and involve key stakeholders with varying views of the market • Build and maintain credit models and tools which are consistent, version controlled, scalable and follow established procedures • Work closely with the Credit Ratings leadership team and Analytical Product team to shape the roadmap for credit model development • Interface with internal and external stakeholders, helping the team gain support for a given credit model and be a strong advocate and educator about our collection of credit models with the investor community • Collaborate with internal compliance teams to communicate current state of overall model library with internal business stakeholders and regulators Requirements • A master’s degree or PhD in a finance or quantitative discipline highly preferred • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the credit markets • Proven leadership for building and managing a team of data scientists/quantitative analysts • Excellent written and oral communication skills • Ability to explain, defend, garner support for and communicate technical and statistical components of models to both internal and external business stakeholders • Significant experience with the technology landscape in big data • Passion for high quality credit analysis • Experience in the field of predictive analytics and statistics with broad knowledge of existing artificial intelligence and data mining algorithms • Significant experience with one or more of the following languages Python, R, SAS, SQL • Excellent aptitude for application of mathematical and quantitative methods to business problems • Ability to travel to office locations in North America and Europe • Familiarity with Agile software engineering practices • Intellectual curiosity for the world of quantitative research 036_MstarResearchLLC Morningstar Research Services LLC Legal Entity Morningstar New York NY
