ultrainnovative Tackle rare and dynamic challenges
In this role, you will serve as Head of the Contracts group and serve as Counsel to the R&D Legal function within Ultragenyx's Legal Department. You will provide expertise with R&D contracting. You will also manage and provide expert advice to a team consisting of a Commercial Contracts Associate Counsel, Contract Paralegals, and Operations Specialists. You will bring strong skills in management, collaboration and collegiality to the role with strong emphasis on ethics. You will develop and nurture a culture of high performance and professionalism. Position reports to the Vice President, Legal - Commercial and R&D.
Responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Manage and provide expert advice to a team of 7 experienced Contracts managers and specialists performing similar work
Negotiate, draft, review and counsel on a wide variety of R&D agreements
Oversee and ensure consistent legal advice on clinical trial contracts, informed consents, consulting agreements, investigator-initiated studies, patient engagement contracting, confidentiality and other types of agreements
Support, oversee and assign R&D legal support to appropriate sub-teams of the company's development focused global product teams
Foster strong relationships within R&D, compliance, commercial law, intellectual property law and other related groups within the global enterprise to create efficient and effective processes and tools for clients
Establish the corporate contracting strategy, managing governance processes, implementing strategies and proposing corrective actions as corporate dynamics change
Establish key performance indicators, building performance dashboards, analyzing performance and recommending corrective actions to drive contracting initiatives resulting in growth and efficiency
Manage transactional team and contracting operations
Work closely with the Vice President Legal to monitor market conditions, changes in laws and regulations and educate internal and external personnel on the implications of any such changes
Collaborate with Finance, Legal, Government Pricing, Compliance and other departments to establish consistent business rules and "playbooks" focused on appropriate reporting and compliance with all laws and regulations.
Establish key performance indicators (including pre/post contract analytics tools/metrics), building performance dashboards, analyzing performance and recommending corrective actions related to contracting
Build contracting SOP's, cross functional consensus and approval process
Support and assist the Vice President Legal in developing recommendations for senior leadership pertaining to the overall strategies across the organization
Lead in the development and delivery of performance metric programs (internal and external stakeholders)
Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop key performance dashboards/metrics
JD from an accredited institution
Active member of a U.S. State Bar
Pharmaceutical or Biotech experience required
Extensive knowledge in the areas of commercial and clinical pharmaceutical contracting
10+ years of experience and technical/functional expertise in biotech, pharma industries
Experience with cross-functional, large scale initiatives with high degree of complexity
Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while adjusting priorities as needed to meet deadlines
Demonstrated experience in leading teams
Must possess strong analytical and communication skills
Strong problem solving and strategic thinking
