Job Description:

The Head Equipment Manager is responsible for the overall administration of the Athletic Equipment Room.

This is a 43 weeks per year/ .833 FTE position.

Essential Functions

  • Inventories, organizes, issues, and collects equipment and uniforms for all varsity programs.

  • Responsible for daily laundering of practice and game uniforms, as well as uniforms of visiting teams during tournament play.

  • Assists head coaches with the selection and purchase of athletic equipment and uniforms, while staying within each sport's equipment budget.

  • Works with Director of Athletics to negotiate department uniform/apparel/equipment contract.

  • Maintains working knowledge of contract and works with company rep to ensure compliance with contract.

  • Facilitates communication with company rep and coaches.

  • Purchases and maintains helmets and pads for football, men's and women's ice hockey, and men's and women's lacrosse.

  • Understands and meets all requirements related to fitting and reconditioning of helmets and pads.

  • Assigns locker rooms for all Norwich and visiting teams, and officials.

  • Attends all football practices and games, both home and away, or makes arrangement for equipment needs to be met in her/his absence.

  • Orders laundry supplies and other equipment room supplies.

  • Works with the athletic training staff regarding special equipment needs for student-athletes.

  • Works with office manager to bill student-athletes who lose or do not return issued equipment and uniforms.

  • Manages equipment room budget - stays within budget limits, meets deadlines for completion of financial forms, and communicates with office manager and Director of Athletics as needed.

  • Supervises full-time Assistant Equipment Manager, seasonal employees, and work study students.

  • Attends AEMA (Athletic Equipment Managers Association) Convention.

Other Functions

  • Assesses the performance of direct reports and provides frequent feedback to optimize their performance.

  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.

  • Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.

  • Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.

  • Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.

  • Speaks, reads, and writes in English.

  • Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree in a related field is preferred.

  • 3 years of relevant experience in a related field is preferred

  • AEMA certification required (or ability to obtain certification within 1 year of hire date)

  • Knowledge of laundry chemicals and equipment and uniform maintenance and repairs

  • Experience in a collegiate environment is preferred.

  • Must be knowledgeable of all NCAA rules and regulations.

  • Experience in speaking with small and large groups.

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook).

  • Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 50-100 pounds

  • Frequent evening or weekend hours.

  • Travel as needed.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Frequent computer use at a workstation.

  • High level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.

  • Work with laundry chemicals and bio-hazardous materials.
