Classification/Range: Hourly $24.50

Schedule: 104 days split over two sessions in Fall and Spring

POSITION PURPOSE:

To provide delicious meals for all persons at the assigned Outdoor School Sites. Manage a kitchen staff and support site staff in operating a week long overnight experience for 6th graders and high school students in Multnomah County.

NATURE & SCOPE:

This position is subject to board policies, administrative rules and procedures, department

regulations, and applicable state and federal statutes. This position carries no administrative

authority or responsibility. It carries the supervisory authority necessary to accomplish the

duties and responsibilities that are defined herein.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares specific menus containing meals/snacks.

  • Orders food and meal supplies according to established procedures, and maintains adequately stocked kitchen.

  • Adheres to program procedures set forth in the Outdoor School Cook's Manual.

  • Maintains records and reports as indicated.

  • Schedules, directs, and monitors Cook Assistants.

  • Coordinates dining activities with the dining hall steward.

  • Communicates with others utilizing appropriate verbal and non-verbal interactions.

  • Preparation work for each meal includes, but is not limited to:

  • Preparing serving area for each meal.

  • Preparing snacks for the afternoon.

  • cabin time

  • Preparing snacks for adults / high school students in the evening.

  • Placing food into serving dishes for tables during meals.

  • Filling condiment containers (sugar, salt, pepper, ketchup, etc.)

  • Cleaning counters and coffee area after meals.

  • Sweeping / mopping floors as needed.

  • Wash pots/pans as needed.

  • Cleaning cooking utensils.

  • Unloading and stacking deliveries.

  • Preparing boxes for students' cook-outs.

  • Filling flour/sugar bins as needed.

  • Serving meals to the site population.

  • Washing dishes as needed.

Good food and meals are essential to students' success at Outdoor School. Meals for students that are delicious, plentiful, and healthy can make or break a student's experience. We are looking for a head cook who can manage cooking for around 200 people per day, including dietary alternatives, work with a team of dedicated staff, and provide students with this basic and tasty need.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Daily and consistent attendance and punctuality

  • Experience managing a kitchen staff and cooking for large quantities of people

  • Ability to transport self to and from site

  • Ability to pass a background check

  • Ability to relate to children and adolescents in a friendly and pleasant manner.

  • Knowledge of proper kitchen hygiene and attire.

  • Ability to obtain Food Handlers Card prior to first day on the job.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-3 years experience working in a kitchen

  • Experience in professional cooking to include meal planning and preparation.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an overnight camp with a fully functioning kitchen. Work is performed fully in person.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Mobility: Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move around for extended periods of time.

  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Vision: Visual acuity to read and interpret written and electronic information.

  • Dexterity: Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and operate objects, tools, or controls.

  • Hearing/speaking: Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information so others will understand.

  • Emotional/Psychological: Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in challenging situations, remain empathetic and understanding towards individuals with diverse backgrounds and needs, handle stress and pressure effectively, and adapt to change in the workplace.
