JOB SUMMARY

The Head Coach of Cross Country and Assistant to the Head Track & Field Coach is responsible for maintaining a high-quality NAIA athletic program that supports student recruitment and enhances the educational experience and personal growth of the student-athletes. This position will manage the Cross-Country team and assist the Head Track and Field Coach, and all aspects according to the Columbia College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Policies and Procedures. The Head Coach must conduct all activities in accordance with all state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and the College's policies and procedures. Additionally, this position must comply with all AAC and NAIA regulations while maintaining the highest ethical standards. This position works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision of the Athletic Director.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Recruits and trains all men and women's cross-country student-athletes.

  • Schedules contests, arranges travel and transportation, follows budgetary guidelines, purchases equipment, inventories equipment and supplies, and all issues related to the intercollegiate men and women's cross-country program.

  • Accurately and completely portrays College's educational programs, expected outcomes, student services, and financial consideration to students, parents, and educators.

  • Monitors academic progress and eligibility of men and women's cross-country student-athletes.

  • Participates in appropriate Department of Intercollegiate Athletics activities, including weekly staff meetings, training sessions, orientation programs, cultural and social activities, etc. Makes available any representational and public relations activities.

  • Communicates and cooperates in a highly professional manner with all departments and/or administrative units at Columbia College relevant to problems or potential problems that may arise, and ultimately, have an impact on your program.

  • Conducts all activities in accordance with the highest ethical standards; adheres to all state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and the College's conference and NAIA policies and procedures, regarding intercollegiate athletic activities.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Bachelor's degree in sports management, business, science or closely related field; Master's preferred.

  • Must have at least two (2) years of successful cross-country coaching experience, preferably at the college/university level.

  • Prior experience working in a college environment with interactions with faculty, staff, and students preferred.

  • Must have a strong knowledge of sport specifics, strength training, and game day competitions.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours which may include early/late hours, occasional weekends, and the ability to travel.

  • Must have a valid SC Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

  • Must be qualified to operate, willing and able to safely drive a 12 or 15-passenger van which is consistent with the College's insurance regulations.

  • Must pass a background check.

  • Must have a high attention to detail and maintain a personal standard of excellence.

  • Must have desire and knowledge to help maintain sports facilities as needed for practice and game day competitions.

  • Required to report any athlete/team issues that are detrimental to the team, department, or college; any illegal activities must be reported immediately.

  • Must be willing to work within and follow the guidelines of the College, and the Department of Athletics at all times.

  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.

  • Ability to meet schedules and timelines.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; excellent interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work requires the ability to move and lift 30 to 50 pounds independently and be able to perform strenuous physical labor, and the ability to exert 30 to 50 pounds of force frequently. May be required to use a ladder. Also requires frequent bending, squatting, standing, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, crawling, and occasional sitting. May be required to occasionally work in small, hard to reach spaces. Work is performed both inside a facility and outdoors in all weather conditions. Some hazardous situations may exist based on work to be performed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals.
