Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for the preventive, emergenceny and rehabilitative medical care of the varsity athlietic team members. This position also supervises and guides the Assistant Athletic Trainer while providing coverage and suppert for NDMU sports camps amd clinics as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Provide preventive care and emergency treatment for NDMU varsity student-athletes at all home contests and practices.

  • Provide rehabilitation supervision and other follow-up treatment for NDMU varsity student-athletes.

  • Serve as an Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI) for Towson University Student Athletic Trainers or other CAATE programs.

  • Provides care and treatment of visiting team student-athletes. Communicate recommended follow-up treatment to visiting coach and athletic trainer.

  • Maintain injury treatment and rehabilitation records; prepare end-of-season summaries for the Director of Athletics.

  • Serve as primary liaison to NDMU team physician as well as student-athletes' personal physicians. Provide referrals to other physicians as treatment requires.

  • Communicate with opposing team athletic trainers regarding treatment for NDMU student-athletes prior to travel.

  • Regular, professional communication with coaches, student-athletes, athletic department staff, and student-workers.

  • Attend weekly athletics department meetings.

  • Ensure the athletic training department's compliance with applicable laws surrounding health information privacy (HIPAA), FERPA, Title IX etc.

  • Ensure the athletic training department's compliance with NDMU, NCAA and CSAC policies and procedures.

  • Coordinate purchasing and maintain inventory of all medical treatment supplies and equipment.

  • Use SportsWare software to maintain student-athlete health records and injury documentation.

  • Performs administrative functions related to the management of the athletic training program, such as secondary insurance claims, creation and revision of sports medicine policies and procedures, documentation of all injuries and rehabilitation, and athletic conference-related sports medicine paperwork and communication.

  • Attend athletic conference athletic training meetings.

  • Collaborate with the Department of Campus Security the servicing and maintenance of the Athletic Department's Automatic External Defibrillators (AED).

  • Coordinate with the University Laboratory Safety Officer for the disposal of medical waste, and compliance with University OSHA safety guidelines.

  • Prepare and maintain first aid kits for team travel.

  • Teach and supervise 2-3 student-athletic trainers from the Towson University Athletic Training Program or other CAATE Athletic Training Programs.

  • Supervise the Assistant Athletic Trainer

  • Required to cover summer sports camps and/or clinics as hosted by NDMU.

  • Performs such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required.

Qualifications

Knowledge: Qualified candidates will have a bachelor's degree, with a master's degree preferred, current NATABOC certification, Maryland Licensure by the Maryland Board of Physicians or be eligible for certification, and CPR/AED for the Healthcare Provider certification by a NATA approved provider. Preference will be given to candidates who have certification as CPR/AED instructors. Candidates must also have a minimum of one year experience as an athletic trainer at the collegiate level or a minimum of three years' experience at the high school level. Candidates should be detail oriented, highly organized, computer literate, and able to operate injury rehabilitation equipment. This is a 12 month position, and candidates need to be available to work evening and weekend hours.

Experience: Minimum one year experience as an athletic trainer at the collegiate level or minimum three years' experience at the high school level.

Skills/Aptitude: Detail oriented, highly organized, ability to communicate professionally and effectively, computer literate, able to operate injury rehabilitation equipment and familiar with fitness and conditioning equipment. Use of SportsWare software to track and document athletic injuries and conditions.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Will involve evening and weekend commitments. Will require long periods of standing, sitting or walking. Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds and assist with game day setup. This is a full-time, 12 month position.
