Job Description:

Directs the athletic training for Intercollegiate Athletics and oversees the athletic training clinic. Coordinates medical coverage for athletic events. Manages Athletic Trainers in the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Directs departmental operations, including the development and implementation of department policies, processes, and procedures. The Head Athletic Trainer reports to the Director of Athletics and must be able to develop positive relationships with faculty, staff, and students, while interacting successfully with department personnel and the College community.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Serve as the Athletics Health Care Administrator for the department.

  • Collaborate with Team Physicians on the care of athletes.

  • Provide/direct medical service to teams, and assists in the supervision of medical services for all student-athletes to include:

  • prevention of athletic injuries

  • recognition and evaluation of athletic injuries

  • acute care of athletic injuries

  • rehabilitation of athletic injuries

  • Maintain a schedule for open clinic times for patients that promotes work/life balance.

  • Coordinate medical care staffing for home events.

  • Travel limited to away football games only.

  • Assist in the organization and administration of athletic training to include:

  • develop and participate in pre-participation physical examinations for all athletes.

  • maintain and supervise the maintenance of accurate medical records for all athletes in PyraMed (EMR)

  • inform the coaching staff of the physical and emotional status of their athletes as it pertains to their participation in that sport.

  • education and advising of athletes regarding personal health.

  • Oversee the athletic training budget including inventory and ordering supplies.

  • Update SOPs and EAPs to the current guidelines.

  • adherence to institutional, Gulf South Conference and NCAA rules and regulations

  • Oversee documentation practices of AT staff.

  • Supervise and evaluate the staff athletic trainers.

  • Create, submit, and manage insurance claims as needed.

  • communication with insurance broker as needed for claim clarification

Requirements:

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient use of athletic training supplies and equipment, therapeutic modalities, computer, and software.

  • Strong supervisory skills to facilitate a positive, engaging work environment.

  • Ability to manage emergency situations while maintaining a calm demeanor and providing professional care.

  • Demonstrated teamwork mindset prioritizing the student athlete at all times.

Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's preferred

  • BOC Certified in Athletic Training

  • Ohio Licensed in Athletic Training or able to obtain by July 1

  • American Red Cross (ARC) Instructor Certifications in Responding to Emergencies and CPR for the Professional Rescuer is preferred

  • Five to seven years of experience as an athletic trainer

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to work in a variety of indoor/outdoor settings dependent on the sporting event assigned. This could include cold/hot temperatures and rain or snow.

  • Ability to lift a patient with assistance from coaches or other support staff. Occasional stretching, twisting, grasping, pulling, and other semi-strenuous activities while treating a student athlete.

  • Ability to respond quickly to student's injuries during athletic events with the proper medical supplies and safety protection readily available.

  • Occasionally assist with filling and moving coolers which may be 50lbs.
