Description of Work

The HCT I/Classroom Based Health Care Technician 1 (CBTR1) is responsible for providing educational and direct care services during the day program and other areas as needed. The CBTR1 is responsible for implementing training for groups of residents addressing the skill areas of self-care, vocational communication, community living and functional academics. This includes, but not limited to, designing and writing goaled programs, collecting data on resident objectives, writing monthly progress notes and transporting residents to various locations, both on and off campus, in a state van.

The position requires the ability to comprehend and implement verbal and written directions including residents' person-centered plans. React quickly under stressful situations to keep residents safe and intervene with resident care based on individual BSPs. Additionally, this position Must assist residents with personal care in both the home(s), the classroom and during mealtimes through out the day.

The selected candidate must be physically and mentally capable of providing seven hours of care and training to individuals with severe intellectual and physical disabilities with a one hour meeting / planning time allotment.

The working hours for this position are Monday

  • Friday 8:00 am

  • 5:00 pm

Salary Grade: GN04

Recruitment range: $31,200.00 - $38,229.00

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Documented experience working with behavioral plans.

Management Preferences:

  • 1 year of experience providing direct services to individuals with developmental disabilities.

  • Licensed to transport residents in a state vehicle; (must hold a valid NC Driver's License and has successfully completed the JIRDC Van Transportation class).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.

The academic program includes preschool, elementary, middle and high school following a regular school calendar and a four week summer program. Students may have additional disabilities. Professional support services are provided. A residential program is available for students. NCSD enrolls students from NC's 47 western counties. Daily and weekly transportation routes are available dependent on distance. Support services and administration operate year-round. North Carolina School for the Deaf is currently recruiting for a 2nd Shift Residential Life Trainer. This position will provide continuity of support and behavior programming for students with multiple and complex behavioral health needs including management of emotions and behaviors, provide 1:1 and small group support to assist students to understand and manage emotions, and set and achieve positive goals including independent living skills. This position ensures individualized special needs are met with consideration given to each student's age, culture, and physical and mental limitations. This position is also responsible for keeping supervisors of academic and residential programs informed of the condition of student's behaviors and affect. Duties will include documentation of student behaviors using formal behavior management tools; providing student(s) with feedback on behavioral goals; and will implement behavior reinforcement as specified in students' behavior intervention plan. Collaboration with other residential shifts and academic and support staff will be necessary. In addition, this position is responsible for some housekeeping activities involved in the care of a dormitory at the North Carolina School for the Deaf. This position will insure the safety of students during fire drill evacuations or other types of emergencies, and know where students are at all times. This position is expected to exercise considerable judgment in the supervision and care of students and in the care of the dormitory. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies An ideal candidate will have knowledge of child development and to be skillfully trained at working with children including children with physical, emotional and mental disabilities, and to have the ability to settle disputes in a calm and non-threatening manner. Staff needs the ability to maintain a safe, healthy living environment for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Staff also needs to be able to identify and report changes in students' conditions, keep simple records, write reports, and can act quickly and effectively in an emergency, and follow oral/signed and written instructions. Staff need some knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, and common health and safety precautions. It is important to be physical fit and have a high energy level. It is important to have a good communication skills and interpersonal skills, along with organizational skills. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in an age appropriate childcare setting or a goal-oriented setting; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
