The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Division of Fire Prevention- State Fire Marshal, seeks a qualified individual to serve as a Hazardous Materials Inspector I.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect facilities that store and utilize flammable and combustible liquids.

  • Inspect facilities that store and utilize flammable gases.

  • Consults with design professionals, contractors, facility owners and other officials concerning flammable and combustible materials.

  • Perform entry level plan reviews.

  • Perform entry level fire and explosion investigations.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficient communication skills

  • Proven abilities to manage multiple projects

  • Conduct effective code research

  • Demonstrate attention to detail

  • High level of customer service

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have one year of experience in fire safety or the inspection and/or handling of hazardous materials.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Related technical training will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Related technical experience will substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification.

Working Conditions

Frequent travel is required to inspect sites and respond to hazardous material incidents.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.

The Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction enforces statewide standards for building construction. The agency ensures fire and life safety in existing buildings, licenses/certifies plumbers, electricians, boiler contractors, sprinkler and/or fire alarm contractors and building inspectors. The Manufactured Housing Inspector is a position that serves as an integral part of the Manufactured Housing inspection and consumer complaint process. This position is responsible for performing inspections of manufactured homes and recreational vehicles to ensure they are safe to occupy based upon certain industry standards, conduct consumer complaints investigations and completes inspection reports. Key Responsibilities: * Learns to inspect the installation of new manufactured homes, life safety conditions of used manufactured homes and use of recreational vehicles. * Investigates alleged violations and obtains information for prosecution of offenders, assisting with approved legal actions resulting from complaints and investigations. * Attends meetings and training sessions.
