Job Summary

The Hatchery Technician responsibilities will include fish breeding, water quality sampling and analysis, feeding, tank maintenance and other hatchery duties.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage the care of numerous groups, species, and patterns of tropical aquarium fish to include maintaining healthy/conditioned brood stock, maintaining several different distinct lines of fish, setting up, breaking down spawning tanks, and mixing hatching water.

• Manage the care and handling of fish embryos and fry. This requires gentle handling and great attention to detail.

• Assess fish health. Quarantine and medicate fish as needed.

• Calculate dosage and administer injections.

• In-Vitro fertilization of fish.

• Anesthetize fish and bring them back successfully.

• Collect and analyze data related to stocking/ harvesting dates, growth, age and size class information and species.

• Maintain Biosecurity.

• Analyze water quality and adjust as needed.

• Manage breeding of tropical aquarium fish.

• Maintain healthy/conditioned brood stock, analyzing and adjusting as needed.

• Manage the process of spawning to include hormonal induced spawning, in vitro fertilization, breaking down tanks, and mixing the appropriate spawning water.

• Run experimental crosses and track outcomes.

• Catheterize fish and check for oocyte maturation.

• Maintain multiple lines of phenotypically identical fish.

• Able to learn new species and develop production plans.

• Careful Transportation, handling, and sorting of fishes both juveniles and adults.

• Responsible for the maintenance of all fish holding areas to include water exchanges, siphoning tanks, keeping nets and siphon hoses sanitized and ready for use and cleaning floors and

• Maintain facilities to "show ready" standards.

Education and Experience Profile

• College Degree in scientific field required. Master's Degree a plus.
• 2-5 years of aquaculture education and/or hatchery/fish breeding experience required.

Required Skills

• Understanding of basic genetics.

• Ability to be flexible and change with the demands of new species.

• High degree of discretion dealing with confidential and proprietary information.

Work Environment

• Must be able to work in extremely hot and humid conditions.

• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently.

• Must be able to bend up and down frequently.

• Must be able to be on feet most of the day.
