With that in mind,

Picture yourself supporting WDFW's mission by ensuring the success of fish production from incubation to release, providing for recreational and commercial fishing opportunities.

With your experience, you will transport and operate heavy equipment, transport gravel and soils in dump trucks, conduct basic carpentry, commercial plumbing, light fabrication, and welding.

These are opportunities to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and specifications.

Our Hatchery Maintenance Specialist,

Performs Heavy Equipment Operation:

  • Operate construction and earth moving equipment such as, but not limited to excavators of various sizes, wheel loaders more than 80 net flywheel horsepower, rubber-tired loader/backhoe combination 51 net flywheel horsepower or more, AWD Telehandler (off-road forklift).

  • Read and interpret permits to navigate regulations for in water work.

  • Operate laser levels to determine, correct, or maintain grade/elevations.

  • Perform all safety inspections on equipment to ensure safe operational order.

  • Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.

  • Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.

Plumbing:

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs of valves, control gates and various types of supply pipe, such as PVC (Polyvinyl chloride), HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), steel, and ductile iron.

  • Installs water towers, formalin systems, fish rearing ponds and domestic water systems.

  • Performs inspections of water mains, fixtures, and valves to determine need for maintenance and repair.

Truck Driving:

  • Operate trucks and trailers of all types and sizes to transport materials, equipment.

  • Operates vehicles rated at 80,000 Gross Combined Weight (GCW) or more, including semi-tractor/trailer equipment.

  • Directs or participates in loading and unloading equipment, material, or supplies.

  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicles and trailers to ensure safe operational order and report maintenance or repair issues.

Fabrication:

  • Weld and makes repairs to various metal structures.

  • Operates a variety of fabrication shop equipment such as oxyacetylene and arc welders, hand or electric pipe threaders, grinding wheels, buffers and drill presses.

  • Assists with the fabrication of concrete forms.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:

  • Duties are performed at construction sites in the Hatcheries and Wildlife areas and on occasion in an office setting.

  • Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.

  • Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and frequently lifting 50 pounds when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.

  • Operate motor vehicles in hazardous weather conditions such as snow and ice while on mountain passes, highways, and roads (both paved and unpaved).

  • Schedule:

  • Work is performed 6:00 a.m.

  • 4:30 p.m., Monday

  • Thursday.

  • Work overtime as needed/requested.  This may include overnight stays and evening and weekend work.

  • Travel Requirements:

  • Travel required 70-90% depending on the season.

  • Tools and Equipment:

  • Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, chainsaws, concrete cut-off (hot saw) and/or powered motors, automotive equipment, and trailers.

  • Customer Interactions:

  • Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Four (4) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.

  • Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment, such as excavators, dozers, and backhoes.

Ability to:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches and verbal instruction and order parts, materials, and equipment.

  • Operate heavy construction equipment in safe and skillful manner.

  • Make adjustments and repairs to equipment.

  • Follow oral and written instructions, keep simple records, and work to grade.

Knowledge of:

  • Rules of safe operation of equipment.

  • State motor vehicle laws.

  • Materials used in servicing and maintaining heavy equipment.

  • Rules governing operation of state vehicles.

  • Methods, tools, and materials used in servicing and maintaining heavy equipment.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license recognized by the state of Washington and acceptable driving record.

  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner's Certificate.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

  • Working experience in the installation and repair of industrial plumbing components.

  • Boom Truck Qualification.
