Responsibilities

SAS Space Systems is at the forefront of space-based active and passive remote sensing technologies. Headquartered in El Segundo, Calif., SAS Space Systems' design and manufacturing expertise includes electro-optical, infrared, and radio frequency applications for space. From space situational awareness to persistent ground surveillance, missile defense target identification and tracking, weather and climate monitoring, and scientific discovery, SAS Space Systems' solutions meet critical national interest needs. Customers include branches of the U.S. military, the Dept. of Defense, Missile Defense Agency, NASA and NOAA, as well as several classified customers.

The Hardware Engineering Director for the Space Systems Mission area, is responsible for the full life cycle development of hardware products across all product lines. This position will report directly to the Center Director for the Hardware Center, and will have direct line responsibilities for the five (5) Departments. The total engineering staff allocation to the SS HWEC Directorate totals around 500 engineers.

The Director will provide oversight and guidance of HWEC activities in support of Space Systems Mission area and will manage the day to day activities. Responsibilities of the Director, include but not limited to:

Process

  • Management and oversight of Department Staff responsible for each Product Area including compliance to all Integrated Product Development System (IPDS) reviews and gates

  • Accountable for ensuring process maturity and metrics including that lessons learned are captured and shared

Execution

  • Ensure that qualified resources are available and deployed to programs within Space Systems

  • Review and approve quarterly program EACs

  • Accountable for the quality and timeliness of work products executed by Hardware engineers

  • Accountable for transition to production of hardware work products

  • Responsible for the management of overhead budget for training and other overhead activities

Growth

  • Responsible for HW proposal work products (technical and cost volume) for new business activities including development and maintenance of cost models.

  • Working with the other Mission Area SEIT Lead to develop successful integrated bids across the mission area product lines

  • Assignment and management of design Subject Matter Experts in the early capture phase, working in conjunction with the Capture Excellence Engineering office

People

  • Responsible for staffing and skill mix for the Mission Area to include technology and development, execution and production support expertise

  • Responsible for coordinating resources from the Lateral Departments in HWEC

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 14 years of engineering experience

  • Direct engineering experience with electronics for Space applications (EO/RF)

  • Experience with process application for the engineering product life cycle e.g. Integrated Product Development Processes

  • Strong people and "change agent" leadership skills. Accountability and drive; ability to make decisions, effectively delegate tasks and meet challenging deadlines

  • Experience in supervisory/line management, including technical leadership, performance development and career development

  • US Citizenship and existing DOD Secret Clearance with current SSBI and ability to obtain program access

Preferred Skills

  • Current active access to mission area programs is a plus

Required Education

B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems, Science, or Mathematics

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access US only data systems.

The candidate provides engineering leadership for development, integration, and verification of complex space systems within the SS program portfolio. Duties include technical leadership which can include architecture, technology development, planning and coordination on proposals, and assisting program execution (including anomaly resolution). The candidate is an organized, objective, balanced decision maker, who administers technical reviews; mentors program chief engineers, guides engineering; and poses experience as an engineering authority. The candidate ensures quality engineering work, and collaborates with experts in various disciplines in the integration, test, and evaluation of space systems. The individual is passionate about practical and effective application of Systems Engineering to sensor products, and technologies. The role encompasses architectural development through sell-off of space systems programs. Product/Portfolio Responsibilities The SS CE demonstrates an ability to identify and understand technology risks and defines event driven evaluations of space systems supporting technical maturation and risk burn-down. The SS CE is a forward thinker, looking to improve efficiency, increase reuse, and drive common solutions. The individual is a recognized advocate and practitioner of robust design practices enabling rapid integration through application of test-centric design. The SS CE steers requirement flow down and iterative error analyses supporting well-defined test with cost-effective system integration and test environments. The SS CE implements and drives for test verticality, traceability, and realistic efficient plans & processes moving products through the life cycle. The SS CE will collaborate with the SS Technical Director, ISRC IRAD leads, SS BD, and SS Product Line Directors on capture opportunities. During anomalies and failures, the SS CE will support the Program CE to ensure discipline and domain Subject Matter Experts engage in timely review, investigation, and troubleshooting activities and to confirm reasoned corrective (and preventative) actions are documented. Technical Responsibilities The candidate possesses career experience and technical acumen in physical architecture product technologies associated with electronics or EOIR capabilities including digital/analog/video signal processing, processing algorithms, point and stab, control loop algorithms, search/track and image reconstruction/exploitation algorithms, active/passive thermal control, environmental qualification and screening, troubleshooting, continuous product improvement, and upfront design activities necessary to ensure producible systems. The SS CE works with the Business Area Chief Engineer, and functional leaders to ensure SE rigor guides the design for verification. Program Responsibilities The SS CE will be responsible for, determining scope-of-work, support generation BOEs, review of historical actuals, providing financials in support of EACs, proposals and Gates, working with functional organizations to achieve staffing needs.
