The Hardware Engineer I will be an integral part of an engineering team developing power management hardware with nickel zinc (NiZn) battery backup systems for multiple industries. The successful candidate will participate in the development of electrical architecture design, integration and debugging of new electrical hardware, and validation of the design in a structured engineering environment. Additionally, this person will be responsible for documentation of design changes and supporting the transition of new designs into manufacturing and will solve complex engineering problems associated with new product development. This position will work onsite at ZincFive Headquarters in Tualatin, Oregon.

Hardware Engineer I Job Duties:

  • Develop the electrical requirement specifications for Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) for industrial applications

  • Apply electrical and electronic principles to identify, understand and solve fundamental issues for the development of new products

  • Lead, design and execute proof of concept efforts for feasibility and performance assessments

  • Create electronic circuits and schematics using industry best practices and IPC Standards to meet product requirements

  • Use simulations to analyze circuit performance throughout the design process

  • Create accurate indented BOM (Bill of Materials) including component costs

  • Select 2nd alternative sourcing resource during HVM (High-Volume Manufacturing) gate for all critical components

  • Conduct detailed tolerance analysis including tolerances to ensure reliable product performance

  • Manage and work with customers, consultants and contractors as needed

  • Ensure adherence to gated PLM (Product Lifestyle Management) process and methodology

  • Work with internal teams to ensure compliance to all NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) safety standards and customer specifications including UL, CE, EMC/EMI, NFPA, and any other UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) or battery-related requirements

  • Perform electrical design verification and validation testing

  • Develop production validation and product acceptance test criteria to support transition to manufacturing

  • Participate in root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for failures

  • Hold design review meetings with cross-functional team and obtain sponsor approval to pass each phase-gate or design release

  • Domestic and international travel as needed

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent

  • Minimum of 1 year of board level circuit design and simulation experience

  • Experience in analog and digital circuit design

  • Experience designing and debugging systems with microcontrollers

  • Knowledge of serial communications protocols and hardware interfaces including Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) and controller area network (CAN)

  • Knowledge using scripting languages like Python

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Power Electronics

  • Experience with Battery Management Systems (BMS)

  • Printed Circuit Board layout experience

Physical Requirements and working conditions:

  • Work involves sitting, walking, standing, bending, stooping
