Primary Function of Position:

Design and construct pioneering manufacturing equipment used to produce minimally invasive medical devices. This manufacturing equipment will range in complexity from custom manual fixtures to semi-automated electro-mechanical systems, integrating work holding, sensing, motion and vision control. This position will play a critical role in developing cutting edge manufacturing capabilities to enable the future of minimally invasive surgery.

The ideal candidate should have a good understanding of the technical aspects of electrical engineering and design. He/she will work closely with senior level equipment staff and other department staff and assist in developing custom equipment from design to sustained production use. This person will thrive working independently on projects with mid to high complexity.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Independently applies expertise across broad range of design activities and scope to generate designs exhibiting best practices.

  • Assist in the investigation of optimal methods and equipment architecture to perform critical manufacturing operations.

  • Design and implement electronics to support manufacturing equipment from concept to full solution.

  • Document the equipment requirements, specifications, design, and operation in compliance with Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP).

  • Direct and perform qualification and validation on manufacturing equipment to fulfill company and government requirements.

  • Design, implement and test FPGA firmware.

  • Support and modify existing FPGA firmware.

  • Develop and support firmware testbenches.

  • Determine troubleshooting, maintenance, and calibration procedures for equipment.

  • Provide equipment-related technical support to on-going production operation and expansion.

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.

  • Self-motivated, willing/able to take initiative, works well with others in a team environment.

  • Minimum 4 years' experience developing electronics and firmware is preferred.

  • Ability to specify and design mechatronics components such as sensors, motors, and motion and vision control components.

  • Hands-on engineering experience with proven ability to work well in a team environment.

  • Strong ability to isolate and debug embedded hardware and software problems.

  • Experience with Object Oriented development in C++ (or similar) is a plus.

  • Experience with LabVIEW is encouraged.

  • Experience with embedded Linux development is a plus.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Familiarity with regulated Quality Systems, especially medical device regulations, is a plus.

  • Experience in an ISO 13485, ISO 9001, or medical device manufacturing environment is a plus.

  • Able to travel periodically (10%).

The Systems Engineer will work with a group of talented and dedicated people focused on the development and integration of fiber optic shape sensing in medical robotics. The successful candidate will contribute to the verification and validation of the next generation shape sensing platform, requiring both electro-mechanical and software development experience. This position is focused on creating robust, automated test infrastructure for the commercial product, but will also contribute to research projects and field data analysis. As a member of the engineering team, you will work closely with other engineers to design and develop automated test fixtures supporting design testing from the research phase to product development and manufacturing. The successful candidate must excel in a small focused team environment, be able to find solutions to problems from rough requirements and have a commitment to high quality products. Roles and Responsibilities: * Design and deploy automated component test fixtures to support the development of new products * Contribute to the development of requirements & specifications of various test stations * Support R&D engineers, working closely todocument results and communicate results with development team * Efficiently diagnosis and resolve fixture related hardware and software issues identified during testing * Assist in the development of formal design test process instructions that use software and fixtures to perform tests * Support engineers in verification and validation activities Skill/Job Requirements: The candidate must have: * BS degree (or higher) in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Computer or Industrial Systems Engineering, or similar field related to software, electronics, robotics or electro-mechanical systems. * 2+ years of experience in software development or test engineering or systems engineering * Strong written and verbal communication skills * Experience testing and troubleshooting hardware and software * A passion for creating robust and reliable products Prior experience in the following areas are optional but highly desirable: * Experience with NI LabVIEW * Experience with scripting languages (e.g. Python, JavaScript, etc.) for diagnostic and test automation * Experience in new product introduction/development * Experience developing software to control test fixtures or manufacturing equipment * Experience in FMEA analysis Due to the nature of our business and the role, please note that Intuitive and/or your customer(s) may require that you show current proof of vaccination against certain diseases including COVID-19.
