We are currently seeking a Engineer...

Jefferson Lab is seeking candidates for a Hall C Engineer. The engineer will work as part of a team of engineers and designers to design, fabricate and operate Experimental Equipment in Jefferson Lab's Experimental Hall C. The engineer will work on large projects or lead his own projects from concept thru installation and operation. The projects may be large electro magnets, experimental targets, detectors, stands and platforms, cryogenic equipment, pressure vessels and electrical equipment.

Position Requirements

B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Physics is required; or M.S. degree and 4 or more years of experience post B.S. in an engineering capacity preferred. Work experience in an R&D environment preferred but other engineering work experience will be considered. Working expertise in 3D CAD design and Finite Element Analysis required and some experience in some of the following technical areas: vacuum systems, load bearing support structures, electro magnets, cryogenics, pressure vessel and pressure piping, superconducting magnets, physics particle detectors, cryogenic hydrogen and deuterium targets, load bearing positioning and alignment mechanisms and PLC based machine control systems.

Demonstrated English communication and presentation skills are required. This position involves some on-call work in support of operations on a rotating basis. This position requires good physical ability which includes climbing five flights of stairs, carrying equipment weighing 40# for 100 yards, ability to see alarm lights and hear alarm warnings, climbing ladders, using hand tools and small power tools, using electrical test equipment. The candidate must have a valid USA driving license and have or be able to obtain a US passport.

  • Ability to stoop, bend over and climb ladders

  • Ability to carry up to 40 lbs.

  • Ability to access and work in confined spaces

  • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods

  • Visual capabilities to use computer workstations, read drawings and documents, make field observations, and see safety alarms

  • Auditory capabilities to hear safety alarms

The engineer will work on large projects or lead individual component projects from concept thru installation and operation. The experimental equipment includes magnets, precision targets, detectors which integrate multiple materials, structural stands and platforms, cryogenic equipment, pressure vessels, vacuum systems, radiation shielding and electronic systems. Position Requirements B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering is required. Three years' of experience in the engineering capacity in an R&D environment is preferred but other engineering work experience will be considered. Working expertise in 3D CAD design, drawing specifications and Finite Element Analysis are required and some experience in some of the following technical areas: vacuum systems, load bearing support structures, magnets and magnetostatic fields, cryogenics, pressure vessel and pressure piping, particle detectors, cryogenic hydrogen and deuterium targets, load bearing positioning and alignment mechanisms, heat transfer, fluid flow, ASME code compliance and welding specifications .
