One year of experience in the care, guidance or education of a group of educable children such as normal, developmentally disabled, or physically handicapped.
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Function of Work:
To assist in the delivery of an assigned evaluation and training program for mentally retarded students.
Level of Work:
Close from a paraprofessional or professional staff member.
Location of Work:
Department of Health and Human Resources; Office of Mental Retardation.
Differs from a Developmentalist or Habilitation Instructor in that the latter is professional level work.
Differs from other special education workers in that this class serves as an assistant in the performance of evaluation and training programs.
Examples of Work
Assists a Habilitation Instructor or Developmentalist in supervising class activities; assumes responsibility in instructor's absence.
Oversees students in sheltered classroom or workshop.
Teaches basic health and personal care skills and social skills.
Prepares evaluation records, training progress reports, and attendance records.
Assists in maintaining a safe environment for students.
Maintains records on individual progress of students.
