Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 global leader and manufacturer of industrial gases, has an immediate opening for a Principal Environmental Engineer - H2fM within its corporate Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality (SHEQ) division. This is a multimedia environmental position responsible for supporting both permitting and compliance activities for our Hydrogen for Mobility (H2fM) business throughout North America. This is an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of an aggressive and ambitious organization within Air Products as it looks to significantly expand our mobility business. Primary focus will be on development and operation of various Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) networks supporting the availability of low-CI hydrogen that will be a key part of the global clean energy transition. This position will be remote and ideally based in the Southern California area, preferably near either Long Beach, CA or Newport Beach, CA office locations and may require some, limited travel to project/operations sites on an as-need basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist business development and real estate teams in evaluating/screening potential site locations and define/execute environmental due diligence activities as part of land purchases/leases.

  • Perform environmental regulatory assessments of H2fM projects to define and secure environmental permits/approvals including development of an environmental permitting strategy.

  • Either directly, or via management of consultants, prepare and submit permit applications, interact with internal/external stakeholders, negotiate with regulatory authorities and create appropriate project/operational documentation.

  • Provide project leadership with data-driven strategies and abilities to analyze requirements, identify trends, collaborate with stakeholders, and lead cross-functional teams to develop practical solutions that improve SHEQ performance.

  • Build, maintain and improve programs across all environmental media (air, water, waste, drinking water) to comply with environmental regulations, permit requirements, internal policies and standards for project site construction activities and operations.

  • Develop, maintain, and improve environmental compliance tools, monitoring, sampling, and testing programs to demonstrate compliance with regulatory and permit limits.

  • Direct and train facility personnel in environmental compliance permit and regulatory requirements and tools for compliance.

  • Prepare and maintain waste profiles and secure approvals from waste disposal facilities.

  • Prepare and submit environmental compliance reports to local, state, and federal agencies.

  • Monitor agency rule making and analyze emerging regulations to determine impact on plant operations.

  • Participate in company-wide work groups and improvement teams as assigned.

  • Meet with regulatory agencies and internal company audit personnel during environmental audit/inspection visits to assure compliance.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline - chemical engineering preferred.

  • Approximately 5-10 years of experience in environmental regulatory permitting and/or operational compliance support with knowledge/involvement in all media, e.g., air, water, waste.

  • Experience in completing due diligence activities (e.g., Phase I/II ESAs, cultural/biological/wetlands surveys, permit matrix development, etc.) supporting land purchases/leases is desirable.

  • Experience with defining and securing environmental permits, approvals, and regulatory requirements for facilities.

  • Experience developing/implementing environmental compliance systems for construction activities and operating sites and supporting those systems directly and/or in an advisory/guidance capacity.

  • Training experience is necessary as communicating compliance requirements to facility personnel is an essential element of the position.

  • Must be computer savvy using existing programs and systems and able to quickly learn and adapt to new ones. These include but are not limited to the Microsoft Office Suite (including strong Excel skills), SAP Compliance and Event Management, various regulatory agency systems for compliance (e.g., CERS, STEERS, Tier II submit, CDX net-DMRs, TRI, etc.).

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills along with project management skills and a work process orientation.

In California, the anticipated pay range is $132,500-$174,750 plus bonus. It's important to note that individual compensation packages are determined based on a multitude of factors, including but not limited to experience, and qualifications.
