About Us

At Housing Families, we are a nonprofit organization working to achieve housing equity and well-being for all. Our roots began in 1986 when local community members created an organization to address the crisis of homelessness in the Greater Boston cities of Malden, Medford, and Everett.

Since our inception, we've expanded our services to include homeless shelters and housing stabilization programs, academic services, free legal services, and therapy/counseling, among other services. Additionally, our nonprofit operates a housing stabilization program, and has grown into one of the largest operators of affordable housing for homeless and very low-income families. Our newest initiative has been supporting newly arriving families in the states hotel/motel shelter sites.

At Housing Families, we believe in a holistic approach to uplift individuals and families facing homelessness. We address the challenges of housing equity and provide additional well-being programs and services to support our clients on their journeys toward stable, permanent housing.

The Wellness department focuses on providing low barrier access to trauma informed therapy, food, every day needs, and educational resources/support. We support low income individuals and families, most of whom have a history of complex trauma. We provide thorough assessment, develop individualized service plans, utilize engagement skills to maintain both short and long-term relationships with clients, identify resources, complete referrals to outside agencies, and consult with collaterals to enhance service delivery. Our vision is to achieve housing equity and wellbeing for all.

Supervision

The supervisors at Housing Families have extensive experience working with clients in the mental health system. Licensed clinicians will provide individual and group supervision to interns with a strong focus on systematic treatment and individual identity work. Areas of interest and expertise include trauma-informed work with multi-stressed families, systems interventions, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma, group therapy, community-based support and outreach, educational advocacy, and Restorative Practice.

Opportunities/ Responsibilities

We have a variety of internship opportunities at Housing Families. While all of our work at Housing Families integrates macro and micro work, we have different internship tract options for candidates.

For folks seeking a majority macro experience we offer internship experiences with our Development Team engaging in grant writing, community planning, event planning, and community partnership development. Additionally, for candidates interested in case management we have alternative opportunities in our Shelter, Permanent Supportive Housing and Pro Bono Legal Service Departments. Responsibilities include meeting with families biweekly, engaging in needs assessments, connecting to resources and supporting families in general.

For folks seeking a majority micro experience we offer internship opportunities in our Wellness Department engaging in individual and/or group therapy with youth and/or adults. Interns conduct comprehensive clinical assessments and evaluations of new clients as well as work with clients to develop relevant treatment goals to address needs. All interns will work as part of an interdisciplinary team with direct care staff, case managers, and other staff to provide quality care.

At an organizational/agency level, there may be opportunities to initiate/participate in projects, including new or existing initiatives. We are excited to offer stipends! Stipend amounts are based on number of weekly hours and responsibilities relating to status as a BSW, MSW 1st year, or MSW 2nd year.

Requirements

We will accept applications from undergraduate social work programs, 1st or 2nd year MSW candidates or LMHC candidates. Interns need to be highly independent, self-motivated, and flexible individuals. Folks fluent in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Arabic preferred.

Days/Times

Interns are asked to work at least Monday from approximately 10a-6p as interns must be present for case conference and group supervision meetings. Interns should be able to work 1 evening /wk until 7:30, as groups may extend into those hours.
