Elementary Teacher - Music Brief Description of Position As part of an elementary teaching assignment, teaches music education to pupils and assists the staff of an elementary school in the improvement of instruction of music. Major Duties and Responsibilities Teaches skills in music understanding, harmony, explorations in music, and choral music to elementary pupils.

May also teach instrumental music and orchestra. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate music learning experiences. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in the state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Encourages pupils to develop individual music skills to the greatest extent possible.

Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.

Maintains surveillance over school-owned music, musical instruments and equipment in order to prevent loss or abuse. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.

Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment during individual practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances. Evaluates each pupil's musical growth, performance, and musical understanding. Assesses each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.

Prepares progress reports. Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education workshops and clinics provide by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities related to music. Works with other members of the staff in planning a music education program.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other Duties Selects appropriate music, books, and instructional aids to enhance learning. Requisitions books, music, musical instruments, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintains required inventory records.

Communicates with parents and school counselors on individual pupil's progress. Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. Cooperates with school administration in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, PTA meetings, and seasonal programs.

Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. Other Duties Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level. Shares sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committee.

Plans and coordinates the work of aides, teacher assistants, or other paraprofessionals when such personnel are assigned to the program. Under the immediate direction of the site administrator. Qualifications • Credential:

General Elementary or Standard Elementary (Special Secondary--Music • Education: Bachelor's degree with a major in music education or equivalent academic preparation including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. • Experience: Practice teaching (8 semester hours or 180 clock hours) or two years of full-time teaching experience, at least half in K-6 programs.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching music at the elementary level either as part of their practice teaching or paid teaching experience. • Personal Qualities: Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desirable example for pupils. Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health.

Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher. Display musical ability and skill, including the ability to sing and play the piano.
