Nature and Scope of Job:
As a guidance counselor one must function within the guidance services provided by the counseling department at Rock Springs.
Guidance Services focus on the development in all individuals of the skills and attitudes for responsible self-management and rational self-direction of their lives, the development of personal competency and personal adequacy. Guidance Services is the umbrella, or the over-all term, which includes all of those services which may be guidance or counseling in nature. Counseling is only one of the guidance services. Other such services may be orientation, testing, placement, occupational information, educational advising, follow-up, career planning, and others as identified by Rock Springs High School staffs in response to identified local needs.
Job Functions:
Essential Functions:
Pre-High School
1.To present enrollment information to 9th grade students. This includes the course description guide and high school graduation requirements.
In-High School
1.To develop ASSISTANCE PLANS for students who have jeopardized their opportunities to graduate from high school by failing classes. Inform students of options to make up lost credits such as correspondence courses, college courses, Alternative High School and extended semesters in high school.
2.To counsel and guide students and parents who exist in a state of dysfunction as far as school is concerned.
3.To develop assistance plans for students "at risk", result of child abuse, drugs and alcohol, sexual abuse, rape, suicide, STD's, pregnancy, court probation, dropouts, runaways and truants.
4.To provide guidance for post high school plans; employment, occupational trends and opportunities; higher education, academic preparation needed, financial aids information, grants, scholarships, work programs and loans; military services.
5.To review and interpret for students information found in their cumulative folder and permanent transcript, including, grades, grade point averages, credits, standardized test scores, activity participation data, etc.
6.To assist in the planning and evaluation of the master class schedule, to help students make schedule changes that better suit their needs.
7.To make referrals for students to outside agencies that are identified as agencies that can provide satisfactory assistance to a student's problem.
Post High School
1.Conduct follow-up studies of graduates in order to gain information and insight as to how the school might change to better serve the needs of graduation.

All Programs Require:
Follow Up - after counseling implementations of plans and making sure the options are being implemented.
On Going Process - keep in touch with student for the high school career.
Job Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Mental Ability
Awareness of and familiarity with financial aid counseling, group counseling, drug and alcohol counseling, academic and career guidance.
Knowledge of Special Education Law.
Must perform a variety of duties.
Make evaluations based on data.
Must deal with people.
Must make judgments and decisions.
Minimum Requirements (Education, License, Certification or Formal Training):
Must meet the Department of Commerce, State of Wyoming teacher certification and professional standards.
Must have a Masters degree in guidance and counseling from an accredited institution and two years of teaching experience.

Must lift up to 10 lbs, reaching handling, fingers, talking, hearing, seeing.
Must be able to sit and conduct a meeting for 90 minutes.
