Guidance Counselor

Job Summary:
The guidance counselor executes a comprehensive guidance program to meet the needs of high school students. Individual guidance is the core of the program, supplemented by group guidance as needed. Through the counseling relationship, the counselor helps the students grow in self-knowledge and develop personal decision-making competencies.

As a member of a faculty serving 1075 students grades K-12 from over 26 sending districts throughout the south shore, much is asked of the SSCPS faculty member. SSCPS faculty members are expected to cultivate and sustain meaningful partnerships with families from diverse backgrounds.

The guidance counselor is expected to support student achievement and student wellbeing each day. The guidance counselor fosters school improvement by demonstrating high expectations for all students and a commitment to providing the support required to attain these expectations. The counselor must demonstrate cultural competencies and antiracist leadership through behaviors and decision-making in their work with students and their work with families.

Full Time Status = 100% FTE = 40 hours per week

Responsibilities
Is responsible for a caseload of high school students. Meets with those students to discuss academic, social, career, and college placement concerns.
Assists students in adjusting to the high school; meets with new students to design appropriate schedules, provides opportunities for visits to the school, and plans orientation for incoming high school students.
Monitors and maintains records including credits earned to meet graduation and college requirements, standardized testing data, and centralized grade reporting.
Supports students in their understanding and completion of SSCPS Exit Standards.
Supports students experiencing academic challenges.
Writes student recommendations in support of college applications.
Provides students with information on college entry programs, scholarship opportunities and applications, and summer enrichment programs.
Establishes contact with colleges and universities and meets with college admissions representatives throughout the year to promote South Shore Charter School students and programs.
Plans and teaches college readiness lessons to prepare students for the college admissions process.
Maintains regular communication with families and conducts yearly informational meetings for the families of ninth and tenth grade students. Provides families with support as they navigate the financial aid process.
Counsels students on course selections that support their post secondary goals.
Assists students registration in college courses to help them fulfill the college course requirement outlined in the SSCPS Exit Standards.
Provides college fair and college visit opportunities for students.
Supports the overall college counseling and placement program working closely with faculty, families, students, and alumni. Aids students in the transition from secondary school to college and career.
Provides statistics concerning college admissions, postsecondary plans, and college entrance exam scores.
Supervises communications regarding students' summer-school requirements and monitors their compliance.
Is the primary organizer of the yearly administrations of the PSAT 8/9. PSAT 10, and the PSAT/NMSQT.
Serves as the College Board Students with Disabilities (SSD) Coordinator for the school.
Serves as the 504 Coordinator for grades nine and ten.
Collaborates with the Director of Guidance to place students in internships and supervise those placements.
