POSITION: School Counselor - Camden Elementary

REPORTS TO: Building Principal or Designee

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full Time, 183 Days, Master Agreement, FLSA Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree

  • Previous experience in classroom setting and counseling preferred

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong organizational and technology skills to support Comprehensive School Counseling Plan goals

  • Hold a valid Ohio Educator's licensure appropriate for position

  • Must pass a criminal background check

  • Hold a valid Ohio Driver's License

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

School counselors will facilitate student growth and success by providing intervention along with preventative and responsive services that address students' academic, career, and personal/social needs according to the Comprehensive School Counseling Plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides guidance and information for students about academic, career and personal-social concerns.

  • Provides direct services to students with a preventive, intervention, and responsive focus

  • Creates, updates, and maintains Student Success Plans for students

  • Implements the approved Comprehensive School Counseling Plan

  • Keeps up-to-date on current school counseling trends and research by using the American School Counseling Association as a guide to determine best practices within the Professional School Counseling profession

  • Disseminates information regarding career technical education and career opportunities

  • Remains up-to date on changing job-entry skill requirements and changing technologies in business and industry

  • Serves as an advocate for the needs of the student

  • Assists in resolving students' concerns to ensure resolution toward corrective action

  • Assists students in transition to higher education or employment

  • Assesses the Comprehensive School Counseling Plan by gathering data, analyzing data to determine effectiveness, and make modifications to the plan as determined by need

  • Maintains adequate cumulative records on students

  • Maintains accurate records and submits reports on time

  • Interviews students and then reviews the data to provide input on ways to improve retention rates Meets with students to address student concerns related to retention. Assists with the development of the master schedule to ensure students' needs are met.

  • Communicates with parents, students, and other stakeholders about graduation requirements, program options and post-secondary planning

  • Works cooperatively with the administration on state assessments

  • Reviews mid-term grades, report cards and state testing with students and keeps students and parents informed about credit deficiencies

  • Consults with teachers, administration, and other stakeholders regarding student concerns and successes

  • Facilitates IAT (Intervention Assistance Team) meetings for students

  • Helps students be aware and apply for scholarships, financial aid and ACT testing dates

  • Reports suspected child abuse and /or neglect to civil authorities as required by law

  • Coordinates admission counselor/recruiter visits. Maintains up to date scholarship and financial aid information

  • Provides consultation services and professional development to teachers, administrators, and other pupil service personnel to increase student success in coordination with administration

  • Maintains current reference/career informational materials

  • Serves as a key resource in academic advising

  • Assists with programs where students are eligible to earn college credit while in high school (e.g. tracking credits for students, assisting with registrations, etc.)

  • Is professional at all times

  • Demonstrates a willingness to acquire knowledge and skills to meet new challenges

  • Serves on District committees as assigned

  • Is punctual and thorough in the implementation of assigned duties

  • Takes precautions to ensure staff and student safety

  • Maintains confidentiality of personnel and student records

  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee

KNOWLEDGE OF: Board policies and procedures, student code of conduct, community resources, counseling methods; human behavior, career development planning and advising.

ABILITY TO: Interpret policies, rules and regulations, collect data, compile and prepare required reports, maintain accurate files and reports, communicate effectively, avert problem situations and intervene to resolve conflicts, and use computer technology.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

OCCASIONAL: Exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue, light lifting. Duties may require exposure to adverse weather conditions and seasonal temperature extremes.

PERIODIC: Exposure to inclement weather driving conditions and severe weather, heavy equipment, unruly children/adults; exposure to common childhood illnesses.

FREQUENT: Prolonged periods of standing and lifting of supplies and materials. Duties may require traveling to meetings, extended hours, and working under time constraints to meet deadlines. Follow all Board safety rules and procedures. Participate in the school safety training when requested.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Workdays stipulated as per calendar, salary as per salary schedule in effect as adopted by the Board of Education. May be assigned to any position for which the employee is licensed/certified. EVALUATION: As stipulated by Board policy or the negotiated agreement, whichever is applicable.
