The Guidance Counselor attends to the social and emotional maturation of all students, focusing on competency and behavior development, career and interest pathway creations, and coordinating pertinent community partnerships for students. The Guidance Counselor participates in family meetings, course scheduling and advice, and life planning and assessments with all students in assigned grades; counseling is coordinated with College and Career Advisor throughout the 10th grade year. While tending to the school matriculation aspects, the Guidance Counselor serves as a leading member in the HHCA Advisory Council to track student progress, attendance, and behavior, and intervene, as necessary, to provide the most effective, Christ-centered services and community channels for families. Finally, a focus will be on the continued expansion and development of student, faculty, and family curricula to inform correlations between mindsets/behaviors and student performance. The Guidance Counselor will work closely with the Director of Guidance and Student Services to chart competency and career paths for students starting in second grade.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct individual meetings with students in assigned grades to counsel on competency and interest assessments, chart the school path, and inform on careers that match current student passions
  • Advise and schedule courses through scheduling worksheet with students and families that foster greatest future impact and preparation for intended life pursuits
  • Communicate effectively, including as an in-class resource, and regularly with parents and students (via website, bulletin board, Echo, email, meetings, etc.)
  • Implement effective and efficient assessments to review student interests that can be shared with families and incorporated within academic curricula
  • Translate college and career knowledge from College and Career Advisor into effective material to inform students
  • Serve as a leader on the Guidance Advisory Council and collaborate with the Community Life team to enhance student emotional awareness and development through: off-campus retreats, student courses or faculty PD, supplementing Christ-centered, in-house student services, and identification of and involvement with students of concern
  • Counsel students in all grades, as requested, on items unrelated to class or grades
  • Maintain and communicate updated list of community referrals
  • Research, integrate, and inform best practices for school SEL growth; provide professional developments to mentors on how to effectively incorporate in class
  • Convene regular meetings with principals, administrators, Director of Safety and Security, school nurse to address rising trends or concerns amongst student bod
  • Provide students with inquiry platforms and exposure to varied career opportunities
  • Coordinate student registration and completion of competency-based curricula in SCOIS and other learning platform
  • Produce communications to faculty and families that informs the efficacy and outcomes of student assessments and inform of next steps
  • Know and present best offerings of non-college career avenues to inform families
  • Outline career and interest maps, starting in Lower School; publish on school website
  • Support in following processes
    • Admissions- view/ advise new applicant records; create schedules upon admission
    • Support and/or coordinate educational programs (including evening events) and instructional resources
    • Coordinate and support rising grade level student meetings
    • Guidance team:
      • Accurate interpretations and efficient utilization of student data
      • Maintain affiliations with professional organizations (NACAC, SACAC, ASCA) and attend relevant professional development conferences
      • Student, parent, and faculty questions pertaining to Guidance information
  • Any other duties as assigned to support the Guidance team



BS/BA degree plus MEd in School Guidance Counseling or its equivalent


Previous school guidance counseling experience- 3-5 years preferred.

  • Be an innovative thinker and problem solver.
  • Be well organized.
  • Have excellent computer skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all school matters.
  • Be able to follow through on communications and decisions.
  • Have professional experience and qualifications that match the needs and responsibilities of the position.
