Denver Zoo's Learning & Engagement department has an opportunity for a part time Guest Engagement Staff Programs Assistant to provide daily support and execution for all staff-delivered Guest Engagement Programs at Denver Zoo, including Be a Zookeeper Zone, Explore the Shore, Giraffe Viewing Platform and Feeding, Up-Close Animal Encounters, and Animal Awareness Days. This position is designed for a self-motivated, responsible and outgoing person interested in guest engagement and education in an informal science institution. The Assistant will also provide scheduling, record keeping, evaluation, and facility and supply maintenance. Work is split between administrative duties in an office setting, as well as front-of-scenes interpretation and programming on zoo grounds as a lead facilitator and role model for other part-time Guest Engagement facilitator staff. This position is a great opportunity to gain experience in staff leadership and development while still maintaining opportunities to engage and educate the public. This position will have a variable number of work week hours over the course of the year; working 25 hours/week January-April and September-December, and 40 hours/week from May-August, including weekends and some evenings and holidays.

In this role, you will:
Staff Development: Act in a mentorship and lead role for the Guest Engagement Facilitators, including assisting with the training, coaching and mentoring of Guest Engagement Facilitators and Up-Close Animal Encounter hosts in conjunction with the Guest Engagement Staff Programs Coordinator and Manager, preparing weekly staff updates and schedules, acting as the first point of contact when issues arise and working with the Coordinator for solutions, providing conflict resolution, helping ensure environmental and health safety in all program areas, and substituting in to work the program areas.
Program Delivery: Provide high-quality interpretation for guests, through either scripted narration or experiences at specific exhibits, or more informal interactions at themed activity stations or areas of the zoo. Collaborates with other Denver Zoo staff to successfully deliver these programs. Trains in and successfully handles live animals and biofacts (animal specimens) for programs; works with animal staff to coordinate and support animal use in a variety of guest engagement programs. Additionally, provides high-quality interpretive guided tours and supplementary safety and content support to the animal care staff as a primary host for Giraffe Feeding and Up-Close Animal Encounter programs.
Program Support: Support the daily logistics of all programming; creates daily and weekly schedules; prepares and maintains program materials and supplies; responds to concerns and issues throughout the day; assists staff to maintain proper water operations at the Explore the Shore Tidal Pool; refers all special requests and issues to the Guest Engagement Staff Programs Coordinator.
Program Evaluation: Conduct surveys and observations to collect data on guest experience at Guest Engagement programs. Enters data and shares applicable findings through detailed reports. Collects and enters other data as needed, such as attendance and meeting minutes.
Program Development: Work with Guest Engagement Staff Programs Coordinator to develop and update program plans for activity areas, Up-Close Animal Encounters, and Animal Awareness Days.
Communication: Provide excellent communication to all guests, staff, and volunteers. Models outstanding customer service for Denver Zoo guests. Serves as a leader and example for the Guest Engagement Facilitators and Up-Close Animal Encounter hosts and conveys pertinent information to them in a professional, clear and timely manner.

The Successful Candidate will have the following qualifications:
Experience working with guests of all ages with proven customer service skills.
Experience working with children and/or families in a professional setting.
Passion and excitement for connecting guests with animals, nature, and science at the zoo.
Excellent computer skills, specifically with Microsoft Office Suite.
Proven leadership skills.
Self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision.
Able to adapt to new and changing situations in the moment.
Flexible, friendly, and approachable.
Detail oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks and projects at once and meet deadlines.
General knowledge of biological and environmental sciences and/or educational practices.
Willing and available to work diverse schedules, including weekend days, evenings, and some holidays.
Experience with Adobe Suite preferred.
Bilingual in English and Spanish desired.
Student or graduate with a degree in science, education, or related field.
