The Group underwriter develops pricing for prospective new business and first year renewals in the large group commercial market segment, this includes all product lines both on the experience and community rated platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Calculate new and renewal premium using EmblemHealth pricing tools, evaluating risk by analyzing group specific data and determining final premiums. Responsible for all aspect of the quote including preparing the new business proposal, the renewal package, plan/benefit changes and ongoing financial reviews.

  • Develop and ensure that accurate quotes are produced and are within the defined underwriting Limits of Authority, are competitive to the client, yet profitable for the enterprise, and delivered within the department's target turnaround time.

  • Collaborate and work strategically with peers, key partners, the leadership team, and interact as needed with clients with the appropriate support from leadership and have direct accountability for underwriting deliverables and independently communicate results that support the overall underwriting and business objective.

  • Responsible for Internal & external reporting requirements, general financial questions, and other general underwriting responsibilities.

  • Works closely with Sales and Account Management, Actuarial, Product, Operations, Informatics, and when necessary external clients with the support and guidance of management.

  • Provide daily updates to the department tracking logs, complete various reports, and engage in projects and perform other duties as assigned or required.

  • Lead and support key initiatives for the Underwriting Organization. Examples include technical work groups, cross functional initiatives, training support, organization design efforts and actively engage with the Underwriting Team from an organizational project and cultural perspective.

  • Communicate Underwriting needs to the Sales and Account Management and assist with case strategies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree required (preferably in Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Finance or Business

  • Minimum of Three to Five years of Group Health Insurance Underwriting experience is required

  • Knowledge of underwriting methodologies required, especially Experience Rating Methodology required

  • Personal computer expertise (Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word and Access required)

The loss sensitive underwriter will be responsible for assisting in the transaction of loss rated business for the New York Region book of $11M (New York City, New Jersey, Long Island & White Plains/Albany) The individual is expected to underwrite GL, Auto and Workers Compensation lines with a focus on upper middle market customers, and general approximately $1.5 in new business. The position requires a high level of collaboration with the local underwriting teams and external agency base as needed, to communicate our product offering and value proposition. We are looking for a candidate who is highly motivated and results oriented with solid business and underwriting acumen. Primary Responsibilities: * Referral source for loss sensitive business outside field and market segment authority with upwards potential for strategic engagements and management of loss sensitive business. * Point of contact for field on executing loss sensitive business – works with branches to help write and manage loss sensitive accounts, including potential travel to branches and capabilities presentations with insureds. * Assists with development of loss sensitive underwriting guidelines that adhere to line of business priorities and strategies. * Collaborates with other Line of Business Managers, Market Segments, Risk Engineering, Actuarial, General Counsel, Claims and Executive Field Underwriters on issues affecting the loss sensitive portfolio. * Represents CI Workers Compensation practice in assigned loss sensitive projects, i.e. training, field communication and marketing. Requires collaboration with OGC, Branch Services, IT, Learning Services and Marketing. * Develops and delivers technical training via on-site and virtual modules. * Assists with loss sensitive portfolio management including large loss oversight, price adequacy and monitoring of emerging hazards. Skills: * 7-10 years of underwriting experience with demonstrated technical expertise in handling complex Workers Compensation exposures. * Experience with handling Large Deductible, Retrospectively Rated Programs preferred, but not required. * Strong business acumen and knowledge of commercial underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices. * Interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to effectively interact with both internal and external business partners. * Strong project management skills * Bachelor's degree preferred * Demonstrated proficiency of results achievement, customer development, collaboration, teamwork, and problem solving.
