Job Description

NREL is seeking a Group Manager in the Research Operations Center within the Materials Chemistry and Computational Sciences (MCCS) Directorate to lead a new group focused on the effective management of projects, space, software, tools and capabilities to support research. The group manager will be a key resource for ensuring effective implementation of new work planning and control tools and requirements in MCCS, and work in partnership with the design engineering group leader to support the directorate. The successful candidate will help develop strategic plans for long term research operations and lead implementation in their group. The group manager will report to the MCCS Research Operations Director and will facilitate research in all technical areas within MCCS.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and 9-years' experience in technically related research discipline; Or, Master's Degree and 7-years' experience in technically related research discipline; Or, PhD and 4-years' experience in technically related research discipline.

  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

Leadership and Management Skills

  • Experience managing work, resources and personnel in laboratory operations to enable research. Experience in providing direction, setting priorities, and ensuring the team meets its objectives effectively.

  • Excellent interpersonal as well as oral and written communication skills.

  • Previous management, budget development and/or significant leadership in an individual contributor role.

  • Demonstrated skill in dealing with legal and ethical management issues and practices.

Technical Project Management

  • Demonstrated experience in management of technical projects, including scoping and planning equipment procurements and installations, managing interfaces between research and facility activities, and incorporating health and safety requirements into the planning and execution of work.

  • Track and report on project status, financials, schedules, including working with project stakeholders to plan, incorporate and execute changes to projects as needed due to changes in requirements, funding, or schedules

Organizational Leadership

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles, and values - both directly and through subordinate management.

  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain outstanding talent and support a diverse workforce.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor staff at various career levels.

Collaboration

  • Ability to collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with the operational requirements of laboratory environments, including cleanrooms and research equipment. Technical understanding of research to effectively manage installation, modification, and maintenance of equipment.

  • Software Skills: Experience or familiarity with business software for research related applications such as equipment or requirements tracking, or data integration. Ability to oversee or contribute to the development of applications that process and visualize equipment-related data.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Group Manager II / Annual Salary Range: $114,500 - $206,100

NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
