Pay Range

$172,140 - $221,064 Annually for the SEL.3 level

$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Group Leaders in the Materials and Non-Destructive Evaluation (MNDE) Section. You will provide leadership for R&D activities and programmatic support in at least one of the following areas: Medium and High energy Radiography, X-Ray system development, Computational Tomography, Acoustics (ultrasound), and Electro-magnetic approaches in support of the NDE enterprise. You will have a meaningful role in developing successful careers, building a positive working environment, and developing an extraordinary staff to meet program needs. In addition to the Group Leader role, you will be expected to maintain a technical programmatic project assignment. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Principal Associate Directorate.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Provide technical and administrative leadership and direction to group members, write performance appraisals, and participate in the MED division peering and salary management processes.

  • Direct development of innovative approaches and methods for complex x-ray imaging, ultrasound, optical or Electro-magnetic characterization, computed tomography and metrology, identifying appropriate nondestructive evaluation techniques to solve customer inspection needs.

  • Set specific technical strategy in NDE and direction for the team and identify staffing needs necessary to support Laboratory programs.

  • Collaborate with the Engineering Center Leaders and Section Leaders to identify and lead complex technical work assignments for the group members, defining work objectives, tracking and assessing project milestones, allocating resources as needed, and obtaining ongoing performance feedback.

  • Advise and evaluate staff on the execution of technical work via formal reviews; provide technical updates and presentations to senior leadership, customers, and external sponsors.

  • Identify networking opportunities, technical and non-technical growth areas, training and mentoring needs, and opportunities for group personnel, facilitating periodic career development discussions.

  • Monitor and influence the work environment to develop employee morale and well-being; recruit, hire, and retain outstanding technical staff.

  • Provide support to the section leader to address organizational needs.

  • Guide the completion of projects and contribute to the development of organizational goals.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level

  • Develop solutions to highly unusual, highly complex, and/or sensitive issues/problems where the solution path is not known ahead of time, including determining and pursuing courses of action essential to obtaining desired outcomes.

  • Manages many parallel tasks requiring the resolution of conflicting work requirements and the prioritization of tasks necessary to meet pre-determined targets.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.

  • Master's degree in Physics/Electrical/Mechanical/Engineering, Material Science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.

  • Significant experience collaborating with technical business partners to identify and lead complex, technical projects including workforce planning, tracking milestones, and providing performance feedback to involved team members.

  • Significant experience giving technical presentations and participating in reviews, identifying technical needs, developing practical approaches, and delivering working solutions for program customers.

  • Experience leading and managing a team of technical staff, including training, coaching, team building, and career and performance management.

  • Advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management and external sponsors.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level

  • Established subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas: Radiography, Radiography system design and development, imaging, acoustics and ultrasound, signal processing, image processing, Electromagnetic characterization, computed tomography, or reconstruction algorithms.

  • Significant experience in project planning and highly complex technical leadership.

  • Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems.

  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in Physics/Electrical/Mechanical/Engineering, Material Science, or in a closely related field.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
