DRS Naval Power Systems (NPS) a multi-site operation responsible for $350 million of revenue with locations in Milwaukee, WI, Bridgeport/Danbury, CT, Fitchburg, MA, and High Ridge, MO with an employee base of approximately 900 employees. NPS is structured into four Lines of Business: Surface, Submarines, Nuclear instrumentation and Controls and Marlo Coil focusing on supporting the power and propulsion needs of the U.S. Navy. The Group Leader I will serve as the team Lead for the shop floor Quality Inspectors.
Role: At least 80% of time spent performing direct work. Only essential and minimal "people management" activities.
Hands-on instructor "do as I do"; works like all other operators most of the time; caring, fair and demanding leader; floor multifunctional expert.
The key function will be assisting the Quality Manager with analyzing and balancing program workloads and assignments for the inspection team to meet the manufacturing priorities provided by the operations department.
As the team Lead, this position will fill a primary communication role within the Inspection Team and between the team and management. This position may co-lead daily stand-up meetings to provide functional daily guidance and gather team concerns. The Quality Inspection Lead must maintain required levels of quality, safety, and workmanship, as well as provide leadership in process improvement and provide a high standard example of good work ethic.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide a focal point for all communications within, from and to the Inspection team.
Provide work leadership and technical assistance to lower level assemblers/inspectors.
Assist management in leading employees in work quality, quantity, attendance, professional demeanor, and active participation and support of all process improvement initiatives.
Assist manager and employees in resolving work-related issues.
Provide a focal point for the cross-functional communications and organizational initiatives.
Execute in support of Key Performance Indicators:
Safety assure all activity is consistent with EH&S standards.
Quality reduce & eliminate defects and rework.
Delivery meeting production deadlines.
Cost accurately completing jobs within allocated hours.
Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
Ability to work independently and to prioritize next tasks when supervisor is unavailable.
Perform other duties and assist in projects, as directed by supervision.
Creates organizational value by implementing innovative solutions and best practices involved in all processes of the product realization value stream.
Organizational value may include assembler oversight and/or coaching of workmanship standards, drawing requirements, assembly documentation/notes to prevent assembly errors from occurring and to ensure conformance to requirements. The expected benefit is a reduction or elimination of written non-conformances for assembly related errors, as these would have been resolved before the task is complete and signed off.
Assists Quality Engineers with identifying nonconforming conditions that present existing or impending defective conditions at the system or subsystem level of assembly.
Assists Quality Engineers prepare inspection plans and checklists for inspection.
Assist Quality Engineers with data collection and root cause analysis investigations.
Interact with engineers and quality reps on technical matters and problem solving.
A mastery level of knowledge of Non-conforming Material process and customer requirements thereof.
Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization. Fostering professional working relationships with peers to further the output of the group and to learn and teach within the group.
Associates Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
5+ years of experience.
ASQ Inspection Certification or ability to pass exam.
Must demonstrate strong decision-making and leadership skills.
In-depth knowledge of relevant manufacturing standards (such as J-STD-001/IPC-A-610) or common mechanical techniques (such as geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices).
Ability to use various measurement devices (calipers, pin gauges, go/no-go gauges, etc) to verify mechanical part compliance.
Experience reading blueprints and mechanical drawings and able to verify parts dimensions against drawing requirements.
Experience using a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), Optical comparator or other complex inspection systems is desired.
Experience using laser and optical measurement equipment is desired.
Experience with inspecting wire terminations, general and wire harness inspections.

Knowledge of best practices on electronic component qualification requirements.

Experience with Mil-Standard manufacturing.
Experience with process improvement initiatives.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee requires normal manual dexterity, speech and hearing. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to thirty-five (35) pounds, be able to stand for up to 9 hours a day and perform walking, lifting, bending, stooping and kneeling requirements.
