Position Purpose
The Machine Shop Group Lead on 2nd Shift will lead and mentor a team with varying positions and skill levels. This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the daily activities of second shift team members to ensure efficient production and on-time delivery. They will drive decisions with best practices for successful outcomes, troubleshoot production issues (quality and schedule) and evaluate finished products for accuracy to scope. They will work closely with management on first shift to ensure a smooth transition from one shift to the next.
The standard hours for this position are Monday-Thursday 3:30 p.m. - 2:00 a.m. There is 10% shift differential for this shift.
Essential Responsibilities
Manage day-to-day second shift operations of multiple areas within machine shop by directing team members and coordinating schedules
Oversee machinery and equipment to ensure efficient and effective production
Monitor work produced by team to ensure it meets specification, tolerance, and quality requirements, as well as standard operating procedures
Assist with inventory management activities
Maintain strong understanding of the roles within the department and how they are connected/interact with other departments
Ensure a smooth inter-shift hand-off (e.g., communicate with first shift leaders, conduct a department walk-through notating any observations related to tooling, materials, equipment)
Identify issues and implement solutions in a timely manner
Provide verbal and/or written reports as need to management
Build and maintain processional relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders
Set goals for performance and deadlines that comply with the company's plans and vision
Organize and manage workflow to ensure employees understand their duties and delegated tasks
Active involvement in process development to devise new processes and/or adjust existing processes so efficiency and quality are improved
Assist employees with daily tasks, as needed, to provide support and ensure deadlines are met. Be available for questions/guidance
Monitor and influence KPIs by ensuring TAIT's 5 standards of care are coordinated into all daily activities: Safety, Quality, Team, Schedule, and Cost
Lead a diverse group of individuals and support team collaboration and cooperation
Assess and evaluate employee performance and productivity. Provide constructive feedback, coaching, and training
Identify and apply career advancement opportunities
Help resolve employee issues and disputes
Manage employee software dashboards to accurately account for work, time, and payroll
Report team and individual performance to senior management and HR
Ensure self and team adhere to all company safety policies and procedures. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area for employees, including facility tools and equipment
Attend meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required
Take ownership for decisions, actions, performance, and behavior
Perform assigned duties according to the policies and expectations prescribed by the company
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma, GED, or trade school graduate, or 1-3 years of practical experience in machining, mechanics, construction, and/or manufacturing, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Prior supervisory experience in a machine shop, or similar environment
Knowledge and/or experience of G-code and M-code
Understanding of machining, CNC and manual operations, including specialized functions
Functional knowledge of welding
Mechanical aptitude with a functional understanding of mechanics, including but not limited to, assembly/maintenance, power transmission, and electrical
Knowledge and experience using precision measuring instruments
Math proficiency
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and diagrams
Strong attention to detail
Proficiency using MS Office Suite, or similar suite
Experience using Epicor, Slack, and/or Box a plus
Effective communication skills which include, but are not limited to, written and oral communication, active listening, nonverbal communication
Emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills which include, but are not limited to, teamwork, empathy, positivity, and conflict resolution

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to frequently walk, bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat, stoop, and kneel each day. Specific requirements are:

Work conditions of the role are:
Work conditions may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions
Must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work within or visit areas where required. This includes, safety glasses, reflective vest, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, and other PPE as required by the location
