This opportunity may be responsible for both Rare Metabolic and Neuroscience Therapeutic Areas

OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE:

  • Manage and lead a Global Medical Communications Team focused on one or more Therapeutic Areas and provide resource allocation and budget development oversight for the group

  • Oversee the development and implementation of medical communication plans for the brand /asset or therapeutic area

  • Personally develop and implement a medical communication plan for one or more disease areas / assets as required

  • Ensure execution of content development plans for the therapeutic area

  • Oversee congress planning and execution for the therapeutic area

  • Provide executive management for medical aspects of the International Commercial

  • Medical

  • Legal

  • Regulatory (CMLR) promotional and non-promotional materials review process

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Management

  • Oversee activities within the Global Medical Communications team for one or more disease areas / assets

  • Coordinate with Human Resources to recruit and retain Global Medical Communications team members, monitor performance of goals and delivery of medical communications plans, and identify and foster areas for development

  • Actively manage team allocation and budget to ensure quality and timely delivery against medical communication plans. Collaborate with the Head of Global Medical Communications and procurement business partners to manage agency contracting and sourcing

  • Coordinate with the Head of Global Medical Communications and other Global Medical Communications Group Leads to identify and share best practices

Oversee the development and implementation of medical communication plans and content

  • In cross-functional partnership with the Global Medical Affairs team, define medical communication plans for each disease area / asset and oversee Scientific Communication Platform development and implementation by the responsible Global Medical Communications team member

  • Support the Global Medical Communications team with compliant implementation and oversight of each disease area / asset plan

  • Coordinate with the Global Medical Affairs Team and Regional Medical Affairs partners to define appropriate medical communication solutions to support product/disease area strategy implementation across geographies, including, e.g.

  • Medical congress planning and execution

  • Medical field materials

  • Digital / multi-channel approaches

  • Collaborate with the Global Medical Affairs team for one or more disease areas / assets to translate medical strategy into medical communication objectives and activities

  • Personally develop and implement a medical communication plan for one or more disease areas / assets

Manage medical aspects of assigned global International CMLR

  • Resolve escalated International CMLR questions and provide executive leadership in concept design and approval of promotional and non-promotional materials

EDUCATION, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • A relevant healthcare degree (PhD, PharmD or equivalent) is required

  • 8+ years post-doctorate healthcare or related experience

  • 5+ years of Medical Affairs experience, preferably within a matrix structure

  • Strong awareness of medical affairs roles (e.g. Medical Science Liaison, Medical Information, Medical Communications, Medical Education, Publications)

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Experience managing vendors and complex projects

  • Strong knowledge of medical communication approaches and best practices

  • Familiarity with international regulatory and legal guidelines regarding medical communication strategy and execution

Job Description The Global Medical Lead - HAE is a key leadership role responsible for partnering with the Sr Director, Global Medical Unit Head (GMUH), to develop and execute multi-year global medical strategy for the specified Product/Disease Area, appropriately aligned with overall strategy and incorporating R&D functional strategies (clinical, regulatory, outcomes research and epidemiology, PV, compliance). Collaborate with the Sr Director, GMUH, on the development and in-year implementation of the global medical plan and/or support in-year plan definition and implementation by the Regional and Local Medical Affairs functions and drive global execution of specific medical projects per global medical strategy. Serve as Global Medical representative on relevant standing and project-based cross-functional teams ACCOUNTABILITIES * Provide Medical review to Global promotional and non-promotional materials as needed. * Act as a company representative interacting with external scientific leaders, patient advocacy groups and/or regulatory authorities * Establish appropriate strategic partnerships with centers of excellence and KOLs in areas of scientific interest * Work with GMUH on defining and implementing GMA strategy and prelaunch / launch / in-line product plans * Work with the GMUH and Global Medical Sub-Team to develop medical prelaunch and early access strategy, including e.g. publications strategy, congress strategy, customer interaction strategy, and the scientific communication platform for the disease area, aligned with overall product strategy * Support execution of the multi-year medical tactical plan for the global initiatives * As delegated by the GMUH, lead functional (e.g. publications, medical communications, medical training) and relevant R&D teams in developing plans supporting global medical prelaunch strategy * As delegated by the GMUH, collaborate with commercial to ensure aligned and medically appropriate commercial strategy, planning and execution. * Lead design and execution of medical affairs clinical studies (phase IV, disease registries, epidemiological studies, outcomes surveys, collaborative studies, etc.) in close collaboration with Therapeutic Area Clinical Development head and Global Clinical Operations, and Evidence Generation Operations (EGO) * Serving as Global Medical representative on standing and project-based cross-functional teams LEADERSHIP * Act as a company representative with external scientific leaders, policy makers, patient advocacy groups and/or regulatory authorities * Per medical strategy, establish and/or enhance partnerships with key academic institutions and develop relationships with key thought leaders * Per medical strategy, establish appropriate partnerships with KOLs in areas of scientific interest * Represent Medical Affairs at internal and external meetings * Present data on product / therapeutic area * Planning, designing and managing global medical Advisory Boards * Serve as a key medical resource on the disease area and on specific programmes * Maintain a high level of expertise on the disease area * Develop and maintain knowledge of global pharmaceutical regulations, guidelines, codes of practices and Shire policies related to all medical activities * As directed by the GMUH, develop, conduct, or participate in therapeutic training programs for Shire internal departments REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS * A medical or advanced degree, MD or PhD is preferred. * 2-5 years of experience in biopharmaceutical medicine, preferably within a matrix or franchise structure. * Experience in medical affairs is required. * Experience in pre-launch activities is required. * Clinical trial experience including the ability to design and run a phase 4 study is highly preferred. * Demonstrated ability working in cross-functional teams at the brand or disease area levels in country, regional or global organizations is highly preferred. * Experience in the disease area of interest through clinical experience, biopharmaceutical experience or education is preferred.
