The Group Home staff position is designated, at time of hire, as Deputy Juvenile Officer or Youth Specialist, by education level. Pay starts at $18.00 - $20.00 per hour based on position title.

Full and part-time positions are determined by availability, as are day, evening, and overnight shift assignments.

General Purpose:

The Group Home position is responsible for managing the activities of daily living for residents by guiding, teaching, and correcting the residents according to the guidelines and policies of the program. The employee provides leadership for the residents, develops effective rapport, resolves problems, communicates clearly, and utilizes conflict resolution skills. The employee reports to the Group Home Manager. Designation as a Deputy Juvenile Officer or Youth Specialist is determined by experience. Full and part-time positions are determined by availability, as are day or evening shift assignments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the daily living activities of the residents.

  • Initiates each day's activities by waking residents and supervising established daily routines.

  • Supervises and assists the residents with meal preparation.

  • Supervises household chores by demonstrating proper techniques and offering assistance.

  • Assists residents with schoolwork.

  • Transports residents to school, appointments, and other scheduled activities

  • Administers medications following policy and procedures.

  • Monitors residents as they sleep on an hourly basis.

  • Adheres to procedures for documentation and training.

  • Writes shift notes, progress notes, residents daily point sheets and other documentation per program guidelines.

  • Attend staff meetings.

  • Attend in-service education sessions and required classes for licensure and continuing education.

  • Testifies in court as necessary.

  • Demonstrates effective communication.

  • Develops effective rapport with residents.

  • Utilizes and teaches residents proper problem-solving techniques.

  • Utilizes and teaches residents conflict resolution skills.

  • Comply with all Prison Rape Elimination Act requirements.

  • Other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Group Home and Juvenile Department policies and procedures

  • Basic knowledge of personal computers and software

  • Ability to effectively work with the clients and their family.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with members of the team providing quality services as needed.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with staff, parents, and residents.

  • Training in physical restraint techniques

  • Training in CPR

  • Ability to be proactive, positive, and understanding in all areas of juvenile issues, questions, and concerns.

  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Youth Specialist
  • High School diploma
  • Deputy Juvenile Officer
  • Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Social
  • Work or a related human service field.

  • Must have a valid driver's license and liability insurance.

Minimum ADA and Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively with extensive public contact on the telephone and in person.

  • Must be able to speak English clearly and clarify or give detailed facts and information.

  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written/typed documents and text materials.

  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift up to 30 pounds, climb, bend, twist, squat, and kneel in order to perform household tasks or sit and work at a keyboard for an extended period of time.

  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment and personal computer for frequent writing and keyboard use.

  • Physically capable of managing physical and verbal confrontations with juveniles and/or parents.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a Group Home setting. The position may require travel to other locations for training.
