  • Under guidance of the lead groundsworker, performs a broad range of groundskeeping duties, including but not limited to, planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns and flowers. Mows and edges lawns.

    Rakes leaves, hoes weeds, and cleans trash from assigned areas including parking lots. Prepares and treats soils for planting. Show willingness and initiative on all projects and duties. Demonstrate grounds skills in the performance of daily tasks.

  • Operate and maintain equipment and tools for grounds and pest control operations; operate all equipment properly, following proper procedures including safety precautions; service equipment accordingly.

  • Performs pruning, thinning and constructing supports for trees and shrubs. May occasionally assist a qualified specialist with tree trimming, or nursery functions.

    Proper techniques are used and proficiency is demonstrated for this task. Planting and maintaining turf, shrubs, and trees. Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions to properly perform these tasks.

  • May occasionally assist a qualified specialist with sprinkler repair and performs minor sprinkler repair. Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions and properly perform this task.

  • General cleanup. Assure that work stations are kept clean and neat, all tools and equipment are properly stored and the general area is kept free of trash and litter.

  • State employees may be required to serve as a disaster service worker and participate in disaster recovery efforts.

  • Other classification-related duties as assigned. May drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties. Show initiative and willingness in performing other duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge:

Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.

Abilities:

Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Special Conditions:

Ability to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 pounds; carry loads ranging from 20-50 pounds for a distance of up to 20 feet; capable or kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders; walking, twisting, stooping, bending; depending on the project, may spend 20%-50% of day sitting, 20%-50% of day standing, and 20%-50% of day walking. Pre-employment physical required.

License/Certifications:

Possession of a valid California driver's license.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,545 per month

Classification Salary Range: $3,454 - 5,562 per month

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

Position Information:

Full-time Non-Exempt Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (6:00 am - 2:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
