This position of Grounds/Sports Field Maintenance Specialist is established by the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District Committee for the purpose of having a qualified person whose job is to help maintain a clean, safe, and attractive school environment. The work entails following a systematic procedure on the up keep of the grounds, sports fields, and equipment and school vehicles.

Responsibilities and Duties:

1.Perform all tasks assigned by the Facilities Manager to insure the constant maintenance of a clean, safe, and attractive environment for all inhabitants and users of the facilities and grounds.
2.Responds to emergency calls and emergencies on the sports field as needed.
3.Repair and maintain irrigation systems, small engine equipment, and other similar systems.
4.Assists in Fire Drills and Lockdown Drills.
5.Assists in vehicle maintenance, scheduling inspection stickers and fueling of all vehicles and equipment.
6.Research, order and receive/confirm parts, equipment and materials required to perform duties.
7.Perform all forms of grounds keeping work as needed, which includes but not limited to, lawn mowing, mulching, power sweeping, snow plowing, snow blowing, shoveling and other similar duties.
8.Ability to maintain the athletic program which includes field striping, netting, field grading and other similar tasks in concert with the Director of Athletics & Student Activities following online sports schedule.
9.Knowledge of turf fields and equipment to maintain.
10.Ability to safely utilize power tools and equipment such as field striping/painting machine, drills, saws, generators, power washer and other similar equipment to perform required duties.
11.Perform general clean-up around the grounds, including but not limited to emptying trash barrels, picking up debris, trash inside vans/busses and preventive maintenance tasks on a regular basis.
12.Ability to operate a forklift, front-end bucket loader, truck with snowplow and sander, and other large equipment as needed. 2A / 1C Hydraulic or forklift license required.
13.Ability to perform all painting tasks, such as sports fields and parking lots, as required.
14.Be familiar with operation and maintenance of all ground maintenance equipment.
15.Watch for, respond to, and report safety hazards.
16.Possess an understanding of the chemicals and treatment used in the upkeep of the sports fields.
17.Ability to work with and communicate effectively with all school personnel, coaches and students.
18.Understands and maintains continued education in Right to Know, MSDS forms, personal protection requirements, body fluid cleanup and response, and other such required training.
19.Utilize all required safety equipment necessary to perform maintenance tasks when hazardous work is performed.
20.Ability to safely utilize power tools and small construction equipment such as mini excavator, skid steer, and other similar equipment to perform required duties.
21.Ability to learn disinfecting procedures as they relate to COVID, flu, and any other similar situations whereas the State dictates special precautions.
22.Flexibility to work other shifts as needed for outdoor events and the ability to address snow removal shift coverage as required.
23.Ability to use Microsoft programs and other Building Maintenance programs.
24.Other tasks as directed by the Facilities Manager.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 1.3 - 5 years relevant grounds, fields and maintenance experience in a school setting strongly preferred.
2.Extensive sports field maintenance/knowledge required.
3.Be able to adapt to a changing work environment.
4.Background in construction trades preferred.
5.2A / 1C Hydraulic license is required.
6.Building trade licenses or certificates pertaining to the job preferred.
7.First response or CPR certified preferred. Knowledge on the use of AED (Automated External Defibrillator) preferred.
8.Be physically and emotionally capable of carrying-out responsibilities and duties of a Grounds/Sports Field Maintenance Technician. This position requires frequent physical exertion. Several hours a day will be spent walking, standing, sitting and climbing whenever necessary. Activities include moderate to frequent physical exertion in body movements such as reaching, bending and twisting. The position also requires moderate to frequent grasping, pushing, and pulling of materials. Facilities staff are frequently expected to lift 20-50 pounds and must be able, if necessary, to shovel snow, salt or sand and will be required to use hand and power tools and equipment.
9.Be able to work indoors and outdoors. This may involve extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, and heat/cold extremes. Facilities staff are frequently exposed to cleaning chemicals, power tools and equipment, and other hazardous situations that may be encountered during the performance of duties.
10.Ability to obtain or complete forklift, pesticide, blood borne pathogens, Right to Know, MSDS, personal protection and other safety training as required.
11.Knowledge of lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, and the safe use and operation of all power and hand tools.
12.Possess a valid driver's license and good driving record in order to be authorized to operate Valley Tech's vehicles.
13.Possess adequate reading, writing, and communication skills to perform the essential functions of the position.
14.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Facilities Manager may find appropriate and acceptable.

Line of Authority:

1.Responsible directly to the Facilities Manager.

Compensation and Terms of Employment:

1.This position is rated as a full-time assignment which provides grounds, fields and maintenance according to an established schedule when school is in session and also provides for general cleaning and maintenance as assigned by the Facilities Manager when school is not in session throughout the calendar year. The work shift will be eight and one-half hours long, consisting of 8 work hours with a half-hour non-paid lunch period per day.

Targeted work day of: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Extended hours may be necessary at times to meet deadlines.

2.Compensation is based on successful candidates' credentials, approvals and experience. FLSA Designation: Non-exempt hourly.
3.The school district will provide necessary facilities, equipment, materials and supplies as needed to accomplish assignment.
