Under supervision from the Operations Supervisor, and daily direction from the Lead Groundskeeper, this position performs a variety of grounds and landscaping duties responsible for the aesthetics and maintenance of all grounds-related properties, sports fields, playgrounds, and stadium areas associated with the Round Lake School District, to assure a safe, clean, and attractive environment for students, staff, and the public. He/she is also responsible to assist on the custodial staff with the cleaning and maintenance of the internal areas of the buildings when the need arises. Maintains the District facilities grounds, performs custodial and snow removal during off season and in addition, salts during winter season.

Work Year: 12 Months

Starting Wage: $22.70/hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the assignment and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.

  • Mow, edge, trim, and water lawns, fields, and other turf grounds; edge walkways; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; sweep debris from walkways, aprons, and other assigned areas.

  • Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize, and irrigate flowers, trees, grass, hedges, and shrubs; transport and install mulch; water various grounds areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system as required.

  • May at times support the High School Grounds team to perform a variety of grounds maintenance work in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and surrounding landscape; measure and mark with appropriate marking materials or equipment to delineate the area of play and restricting lines as prescribed and established by league and sport rules; drag, repair, mow and edge baseball/softball infields, soccer fields; groom turf of stadium field using appropriate equipment and materials, prep and clean track, track and field pits; perform custodial responsibilities associated with press box, concession stands, booths, bathrooms, and gates.

  • Operate a variety of equipment such as mowers, edger, leaf-blower, sprayers, skid-steer loader, gator, Kromer groomer, golf carts, tractors, trucks, trailers, trimmers, shears, grinders, line-marking machines, snow-throwers, etc. as needed.

  • Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up and removing paper, trash, trimmings, and debris from grounds areas, parking lots, athletic fields, concrete aprons, and other assigned areas, empty waste receptacles.

  • Apply weed/pest control to eradicate weeds and pests according to established guidelines.

  • Assist with other grounds maintenance and repair activities including tree removal, fence repair, general concrete, and asphalt repairs,

  • May at times provide support on maintenance of tennis courts, and all stadium assets and structures, for repairs or unsafe conditions.

  • Participate in the clearing of snow from all parking lots, walkways and entrances using appropriate equipment such as snowplows, snow-thrower, shovels, brooms; de-ice walkways/entrances with salt/ice melt.

  • Load, unload, haul, and transport supplies, debris, materials, and equipment as required.

  • Provide support for the custodial team by conducting custodial duties, when directed.

  • Must work as a snow-removal team member to operate all snow plowing, salting, and snow removal equipment.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The following identifies the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for the Groundskeeper (this is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties).

  • Extensive knowledge of landscaping methods and equipment involved in grounds keeping.

  • Knowledge of relevant State and Municipal codes and regulations.

  • Interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to learn and follow policies and procedures.

  • Skill and ability to safely use hand tools and operate vehicles and equipment used in grounds maintenance.

  • Knowledge of chemicals used to control weeds and pests in grounds maintenance.

  • Basic ability to read and interpret specifications, blueprints, and sketches.

  • Ability to work with and direct individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Skill and ability to mow, edge, leaf-blow, prune, and maintain landscaped areas.

  • Skill and ability to safety and effectively operate all snow removal equipment.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • 2 years groundskeeping or related experienced required

  • Possess a current Illinois or Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Class D Operator License

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses or permits.

WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements:

Employees appointed to positions in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, and physical agility, visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required.

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to significant dust, heat, notice, extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment.

Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.

Reports To:

This job assignment reports to the Operations Supervisor and Director of Operations and receives direction from the Lead Groundskeeper.
