Special Information
The Groundskeeper and Groundskeeper, Senior positions are an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
The work shift is Monday through Friday 6:00am to 3:00pm. This shift may change to meet campus needs.
Work performed in dirty environment and possible extreme temperatures.
Frequent lifting of objects over 50 pounds.
Considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as climbing ladders, crawling, crouching, bending, or kneeling in restricted areas.
Work long hours and occasional weekends.
Work in inclement weather year-round.
Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate in on-call, call back duties and snow removal, which can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Under established circumstances will respond to emergency dispatch calls within set timeframes Administrative or Campus Living buildings.
Job Description

The Groundskeeper and Groundskeeper, Senior are responsible for maintaining the campus landscape and outdoor spaces. These positions assist leadership in fulfilling the Facility Services' mission to the university by providing excellent customer service and maintaining the campus outdoor spaces with efficiency, care and to the highest standards.
The work shift is Monday through Friday 6:00am to 3:00pm. This shift may change to meet campus needs.
Groundskeeper
Lawn Maintenance and Irrigation
Responsible for the grounds of an assigned section of campus.
Maintains campus turf by mowing at the correct height, verticutting, seeding, aerifying, fertilizing and topdressing.
Maintains irrigation systems on intramural fields.
Responsible for the maintenance of shrubs, trees, lawns, and planting areas. Trims and prunes a variety of trees and shrubs, as required.
Responsible for hand watering flowers, shrubs, and trees as needed.
Operates large power and field mowers, hand tools and large vehicles associated with grounds maintenance and landscaping activities.
Assists Irrigation Repairer, installing or repairing heads, lines, valves, clocks, trouble shooting, for both popup and drip systems.
Communicate with your supervisor and customer. Make sure that you have a complete understanding of the request for and ensure that each customer is informed and agrees with the schedule.
Facility Services Support
Removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks, and entryways as required; may operate snow removal equipment.
Assist in trimming and pruning a variety of trees and shrubs, as required.
Removes campus litter and empties litter barrels.
Assists Heavy Equipment Operator in the completion of various landscaping projects.
Assists Lead Mover in completion of moving furniture and event setups.
Customer Services and Administration
Provides superior customer service to the campus community.
Provides detailed, and accurate reports for work completed- will involve daily work logs.
Maintains labor and cost records and requisitions materials, supplies and equipment as required.
Record time and materials for customer billing
Training and Safety Practices
Participates in job-related training.
Responsible for securing all equipment at the end of shift, removing tools and equipment from trucks and placing in proper storage.
Locking all trucks and equipment.
May be required to work in the proximity to hazardous materials and is expected to work safely
Complies with all OSHA regulations.
Performs all job duties in compliance with NAU safety policies and procedures.

Lawn Maintenance and Irrigation
Performs general turn maintenance operations including mowing, line trimming, weeding, aerating, topdressing, fertilizing, sod replacement, edging and thatching.
Perform general landscaping maintenance including basic shrub maintenance, pruning, installation, mulching, weeding, digging and trenching, and general cleanup of trash and litter.
Perform general floriculture maintenance including planting flowers and maintaining flower beds and pots.
Perform basic tree maintenance including pruning, job site cleanup and assisting arborist as needed.
Responsible for hand watering flowers, shrubs, and trees as needed.
Perform general grounds cleanup including emptying trash and recycle from receptacles, picking up debris, leaf mulching and removal, sweeping, window well cleanup, and any other cleanup duties assigned by supervisor.
Snow removal including shoveling, plowing and de-icing.

Operation of equipment including push mowers, weed eaters, rototillers, leaf blowers, chain saws, sod cutters, riding mowers, tractors and attachments, dump truck, utility vehicles, and snow removal equipment.

Leads Student Groundskeepers and Part-Time Temps in the maintenance of grounds and construction activities.
Coordinates grounds maintenance services.
Inspects grounds areas to determine quality of work.
Inspects grounds equipment to ensure proper maintenance and care is being fulfilled.
Covers scheduled areas of assignments during the absence of other staff.
Participates in a training program which familiarizes grounds staff with particular problems involved in landscape and outdoor services including safety, equipment operation, improved techniques and general grounds procedures.
Orders appropriate materials and supplies.
Initiates and ensures completion of work orders for repair/maintenance.
Prepares, maintains and submits appropriate records and correspondence as needed.
Participates in grounds duties on an emergency basis during normal working hours and after normal working hours.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Driving Requirement
Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. Background Information
This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. FLSA Status
This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
