Position Summary:

The Groundskeeper at Bastyr University is responsible for the care and maintenance of the university's grounds under the direct supervision of the Director

  • Facilities, Safety and Security. This position involves managing outdoor turf, flower gardens, ornamental trees and shrubs, athletic fields, and parking lots. The Groundskeeper also coordinates with the Director

  • Facilities, Safety and Security for preventative maintenance of grounds equipment and ensures the availability of necessary supplies.

Essential Responsibilities:

Essential Job Duties

  • Maintain and manage outdoor turf, including irrigation, weed control, insect control, mowing, and fertilization.

  • Provide care for flowering gardens, including pest control, pruning, planting, fertilization, debris removal, and winter preparation.

  • Care for ornamental trees and shrubs through pruning, planting, fertilization, pest control, and irrigation.

  • Coordinate with the Facilities Manager to ensure the preventative maintenance of grounds equipment.

  • Ensure the removal of debris from parking lots, walkways, and other areas.

  • Monitor and maintain the availability of needed supplies and equipment.

  • Manage the care of athletic fields, including mowing and fertilizing as needed.

  • Assign tasks to Groundskeeper Assistant(s) as required and serve as a team leader.

  • Perform other maintenance shift duties as scheduled.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform year-round turf management tasks.

  • Carry out chores related to flowering gardens, ornamental plants, shrubs, and equipment care.

  • Execute ornamental plant and shrub chores.

  • Perform parking lot chores year-round.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to coordinate tasks for the week.

  • Proficiency in maintaining the working operation of motor vehicles, tractors, and grounds equipment.

  • Knowledge of lawn maintenance techniques.

  • Familiarity with proper fertilizers and grounds care products for turf and shrubs.

  • Ability to monitor and clean equipment and tools.

  • Understanding of MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) data and its application.

  • Experience working as a team leader and assigning job tasks to assistants.

  • Ability to assess and decide on plant care, including recognizing when a plant can be saved through cooperation with nature.

  • Proficiency in pruning to enhance the aesthetic appeal of plants.

  • Skill in considering the overall setting and use of ornamental plants.

  • Quick decision-making in prioritizing tasks based on limited time and changing weather conditions.

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of progressive responsibility in lawn and garden maintenance, including large grounds, with a demonstrated background in the Northwest region.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Past job experience and/or training in grounds keeping. Horticultural training is beneficial and can substitute for experience.

  • Ability to read, write, and understand English.

  • Ability to read and understand MSDS data.
