This position is at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, NC. This is skilled supervisory work in the upkeep of lawns and grounds surrounding state institutions or buildings.

Positions furnish technical guidance and supervision to grounds crews engaged in the construction, modification, and general upkeep of grounds areas. Work assignments involving the standard application of horticultural practices are performed under general supervision. Projects involving technical horticultural knowledge and application are outlined by the grounds superintendent who reviews the project during progress and upon completion for acceptable workmanship and adherence to project plans.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC05.   State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.

 If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Salary Grade: NC05                 Salary Range: $31,688.00 - $55,453.00

About the Department of Adult Correction (DAC):

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws.  This department includes State Prisons, Correction Enterprises, the Division of Community Supervision, and the Division of Rehabilitation & Reentry.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Considerable knowledge of the horticulture practices and techniques applicable to the layout and upkeep of formal gardens and grounds.

  • Considerable knowledge of ornamental shrubs, plants, and flowers and their uses in landscape work.

  • Ability to adjust and make minor mechanical repairs to equipment such as tractors, mowers, disks, and rakes.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in grounds upkeep; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
