SALARY RANGE: $10.65 - $12.25 Part time position 1500 hours maximum. Pay range based on experience.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Work activities in this position primarily involve the maintenance of park grounds and facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The list below is intended to describe the general nature of duties only. Employee shall perform other duties as assigned.

  • Plants and cares for trees, shrubs and turf areas.

  • Empties trash barrels.

  • Picks up litter using a prod or by hand or machine.

  • Maintains and weeds flower beds.

  • Cleans picnic areas, restrooms and roadsides.

  • Operates push mower and weed whip to maintain lawn areas.

  • Operates Cushman.

  • Operates 1 ton dump truck for park maintenance.

  • Operates irrigation system where applicable.

  • Operates light riding mower to maintain lawns.


  • Possession of a valid Michigan Driver's License and maintains an acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to operate dump truck, light riding mower, push mower, weed whip, and Cushman.

  • Ability to load, unload and move materials between work locations.

  • Ability to traverse sandy, marshy or wooded areas with even or uneven terrain.

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to work varied hours depending upon park demands.

  • Ability to get along with co-workers, supervisors and park visitors.

  • Will be required to work assigned Special Events, weekends, evenings and holidays.

  • Will be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs.

  • Ability to perform essential duties.


  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to apply knowledge of materials, tools, practices and methods of grounds maintenance.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED: Requires the frequent use of hand tools used for raking, digging, pruning, leveling, repair of irrigation systems; custodial tools such as brooms, mops, toilet plungers; landscape equipment consisting of large mowers, small tractors, groomers and snow blowers; basic construction tools such as hammers, saws, tape measures, carpenter square. Miscellaneous hand and power tools used for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work. Less use of personal computer, word processing, phone, radio, calculator and copy machine.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely required to walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee is routinely required to use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is routinely required to run, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch and must have the ability to traverse sandy, marsh or wooded areas with uneven terrain. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Such activities may involve but are not limited to: keeping buildings clean, maintaining and repairing building utility systems and physical structures, turf maintenance, landscape maintenance, facility maintenance. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's Degree in related field, Bachelors preferred. Applicants with 4 or more years of related service will be given credit toward meeting the minimum educational requirements and will be considered for the position. Two years of supervisory or five years of experience in park and recreation maintenance of buildings, grounds, and/or parks. Position requires a State of Michigan D-5 Water license or ability to obtain license within one year of appointment to the position. Knowledge and Experience of materials, tools, practices and methods of buildings and grounds maintenance. Knowledge of work hazards, preventive safety checks and applicable OSHA/MI-OSHA regulations. Knowledge of the laws and ordinances regulating the operation of vehicles. Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. Ability to operate listed tools and equipment. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must have the ability to utilize telephone, radio equipment, and computer. Ability to supervise employees. Must be available via phone to respond to on-call issues that require immediate resolution. Possession of Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain within 6 months of position start date. Possession of a Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 1 year of position start date.
