Grounds Maintenance Technician

Job Responsibilities

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy), Facilities Management Unit is currently seeking a grounds maintenance technician. The technician will function under limited supervision and perform daily duties to support the operation of the unit.

You will perform the following activities:

• Oversee and assist inmate staff in performing grounds maintenance functions.

• Conduct weekly safety meetings and training with assigned inmate staff.

• Perform accurate inmate count throughout the day.

• Perform lawn, hedge, and tree maintenance and beautification including walkways and parking lots.

• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment.

• Drive van to transport inmates to and from the Academy, as needed.

• Maintain accurate vehicle logs.

• Conduct security checks.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

If you are the right candidate for this opportunity, then you must at least meet the following requirements.

Minimum requirements:

• Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

• Must have at least one year of relevant experience that is directly related to the area of employment.

Additional requirements:

• Must love working outdoors

• Knowledgeable in the use of various trade and craft tools and equipment

• Ability to respond to emergency situations

• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for approximately 50 feet

• Ability to walk 300 yards and stand for approximately 2 1/2 hours

• Ability to climb steps, stairs, and inclines

• Ability to frequently work in adverse weather conditions

• Must ensure that all traffic laws are obeyed.

• May occasionally work weekends.
