As a Grounds Maintenance Technician II, you'll lead and inspire a team of 2-3 Grounds Maintenance Technicians I team members. Together, you will be on a journey of nurturing and enhancing the beauty of our outdoor spaces, completing tasks such as precision mowing, expert trimming, and the meticulous care of trees, shrubs, plants, and lush turfgrass. As you work to shape the landscape under the direction of the Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, you will be at the front of transforming our outside surroundings.
Serves as a crew leader/foreman assigned to specific areas of the County
Supervises the mowing, trimming, cultivation, and maintenance of shrubs, trees, plants and turf/grass on various properties
Ensures crew is wearing their assigned safety gear (PPE) appropriately and following OSHA mandated protocol
Prepares daily work reports (DWR's) of the crew's work that consists of daily tasks/jobs performed to include the amounts of supplies, chemicals, materials, etc., used
Meets daily with crew letting them know what is expected of them; when/if expectations are not met; meets with subordinates to discuss problems/situations
Ensures the crews conduct and work ethics are in the best interest of the County
Participates in the application of herbicides, insecticides, and other chemicals that may be applied to turfgrass or plant collections
Participates in the planting and maintenance of flowers, shrubs and trees and prunes trees on area grounds; seeds, mows; and gives general care to turfgrass areas
Plants flowers and bulbs and transplants items as needed; plants, cultivates, prunes, and sprays trees and shrubs; participates in the removal of dirt, rubbish, debris, snow, leaves and refuse and may participate in the removal or cutting down of trees
Graduation from an accredited two-year technical or community college with a degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, horticulture technology, landscape gardening or closely related field and three (3) years of related experience in horticultural work including the operation of various landscape equipment; or graduation from high school and four (4) years of related experience in horticultural work including the operation of various landscape equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification by the North Carolina Pesticide Board as a Licensed Pesticide Public Operator. Certification must be obtained within six months of hire.
Management Hiring Preference:
2+ years performing work as a crew leader/foreman
2+ years working in irrigation maintenance/installs
2+ years operating heavy equipment (i.e. Skid Steer, Backhoe, Tractor)
Knowledge of grounds keeping and landscape equipment, parts, and supplies.
Knowledge of the cultivation, pruning, spraying and trimming requirements of trees and shrubs
Knowledge of plant maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and grounds maintenance
Knowledge of all equipment and specialized tools used in landscape work
Ability to observe plants and identify plants and plant problems
Ability to assess condition and health of plants
Ability to operate heavy equipment
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to develop good working relationships with co-workers
Ability to train, provide guidance and direction to others

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
