The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Job Summary:

Grounds Maintenance Specialists provide full range of grounds maintenance services for the Laboratory including lawn mowing, trimming, edging, and weeding; clears debris from grounds, storage and parking areas; performs snow removal, ditching, and earth movement tasks as required.

Duties:

  • Trims, edges, and mows lawn areas using commercial walk-behind and riding mowers and other gasoline-powered equipment. Mulch and weed planting bed areas, prune/trim trees, plants, and shrubs. Report evidence of disease or pests.

  • Rake leaves, collect trash, and other grounds maintenance clean-up duties as required.

  • Maintain assigned tools and equipment in clean and good working order.

  • Assist Snow Crew during inclement weather.

Performance of all of the job responsibilities cited above in all campus buildings or structures, including those which house laboratories which handle special materials, is an essential function of this job.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent math & language skills to that of a high school graduate.

  • Knowledge and skill to operate hand and power tools to maintain the turf, paved, and landscaped areas of commercial or residential properties.

  • Capable of operating commercial mowing equipment including walk-behind (48", 52", 60") and other grounds equipment such as gas-powered weed eaters, edgers, back-pack blowers, hand tools, tractors, and snow removal equipment.

  • Effective communications skills.

  • Ability to apply knowledge of rules, regulations, and guidelines of applicable codes

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid US Department of Transportation medical certificate.

  • Possess a valid Maryland driver's license.

  • US Citizenship is required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Erosion control with grading and seeding experience.

  • Tree pruning experience with understanding of disease and pest evidence.

  • Snow removal experience.

  • Basic computer skills.

Special Working Conditions:

  • The incumbent will be assigned to 6:00 am to 2:30 pm shift Monday through Friday.

  • Overtime when required. Shift assignment may on occasion change to meet business needs.

  • Use of personal protective equipment.

  • Outside work in inclement weather conditions.

  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, lift and carry 50 lbs.
