Grounds Maintenance Shop Manager

Job Summary
The Grounds Maintenance Manager is responsible for the management of landscape maintenance and support of service entities and events on campus. He/she oversees four full-time Lead Grounds Maintenance Supervisors; and ten Grounds Maintenance area supervisors whose duties include the seven core Grounds Maintenance tasks which are: litter pick up/signposts, string trim, edge, mow, weed/cultivate, clean up, and check and basic sprinkler repairs. He/she oversees and coordinates with GM area supervisors, coordination with other Grounds shops and/or support services. In addition to managing the shop budget, they plan, organize, integrate, regulate, and support activities and tasks of the personnel managed and equipment needs. He/she coordinates snow removal and ensures that the Grounds Maintenance Shop is adequately trained in safety. The employees managed by this person understand their stewardship which is sustaining the mission of Brigham Young University, which includes `beautifying campus by creating an inspiring atmosphere that invites the Spirit.' The BYU campus includes the Main campus, student housing, Provo Temple, MTC, and outlying properties. Their work contributes to BYU's public image and sustains the influential atmosphere for student's learning and growth as well as all guests.
Essential Functions
Management:
Oversees safety training of all employees
Structures the organization to meet the department mission in the most efficient and effective manner
Manages the activities of full-time Grounds Maintenance Supervisors with support from the Lead Supervisors.
Lead, mentor, and instruct
Establishes area assignments and manage the distribution of special assignments
Oversees the needs for supplies and processes and with collaboration with supervisors, initiates orders.
Oversees staff meetings and allows other staff opportunities to contribute.
Provides and ensures adequate safety training and instruction
Serves as liaison for the Director of Grounds to the Grounds Maintenance Supervisors
Supervises minor maintenance for 95,000+ sprinkler heads
Capital Needs Analysis (CNA)
Manage the shop budget of $2.5+ million
Hire/Fire Employees
Oversees vacation and sick time for full-time employees
Oversees training for all employees
Conducts Professional Development Plans for full-time employees (PDP)
Landscape Maintenance:
Manage four full-time Grounds Maintenance Lead Supervisors who each oversee 2-3 specialists who are all responsible for:
Maintaining neat, clean, and beautiful grounds by performing landscaping duties
Seeing that the seven core maintenance tasks which are: litter pick up/signposts, string trim, edge, mow, weed/cultivate, clean up, and basic sprinkler repairs are completed for water conservation
General Cleanliness: picking up litter, changing garbage can liners, removing illegal fliers from signposts, and cleaning up after each task
Turf Maintenance: edging and string trimming along sidewalks, tree rings, shrubs and flower beds; mowing and cleaning up grass clippings; coordinating with service entities
Tree Maintenance: raking and blowing leaves, cultivating compost into tree rings, reporting disease and breakage problems
Shrub bed maintenance: edging, weeding, cultivating compost into shrub beds, reporting disease and breakage problems
Flower bed maintenance: planning, preparing, planting, cultivating, watering, weeding, fertilizing, and pruning of flower beds; reporting disease and pest problems
Other Maintenance:
Manage the Grounds Maintenance Lead Supervisors as they direct other necessary maintenance including:
Sprinkler head maintenance: checking, repairing, adjusting, and replacing various types of sprinkler heads; reporting valve coverage and line problems
Hard surface maintenance: weeding cracks in curbs, gutters, and walks; cleaning and hand sweeping walks and stairs; reporting vandalism; and requesting service requests for heavily weeded areas that need to be sprayed
Snow Removal:
Establish and prioritize snow removal assignments
Coordinate hand shovel and tractor crews with campus demands and uses
Coordinate hand shovel and tractor crews with street and parking lot crews
Manage crews to ensure campus safety from 2 AM to 10 PM
Education/Experience
Minimum education: BS in Landscape or Facilities Management or related field or 4 years of equivalent experience in Management and Landscape or Facilities Management with additional 5 years in Management and Landscape or Facilities Management or related field
Preferred: Bachelors with an additional five years of experience and 8-10 years management in landscape maintenance or related field
Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications (please indicate whether ¿required¿ or ¿preferred¿):
Preferred:
Working knowledge of landscape maintenance
Working knowledge of small engines and engine care
Working knowledge of pesticides, plants, varieties, and plant growth cycles
Working knowledge of flowerbed designs
Ability to organize snow removal needs for campus
Working knowledge of tractors and implements
