Job Summary

This position will be responsible for supervising facilities, managing the grounds, and supervising staff for events and practices at the Tennis Center, Lacrosse Stadium, Track and Field Complex, Gymnastics Center, Wrestling Center and Sports Performance Center.


  • Assist with the supervision and daily operations of the South Athletic Complex.

  • Perform quality control cleaning and maintenance checks at all facilities and machines.

  • Execute proper opening/closing procedures at the South Athletic Complex.

  • Assist with groundskeeping around parking lots, buildings, and playing fields.

  • Assist in lawn, tree, shrub, and flower maintenance.

  • Safe operation of a push mower, string trimmer, utility cart, and road vehicles.

  • Maintain the irrigation system.

  • Event set-up and tear-down activities.

  • Complete all assigned/related Grounds maintenance duties.

  • Provide support for University of Michigan practices, events and rentals associated with game day procedures and event staff supervision.

  • Ensure proper condition of equipment and tools used during daily operation and maintenance checks.

  • Assist snow removal crew in preparation for events.

  • Assist grounds crew for outdoor lacrosse, soccer, tennis and track and field events.

  • Responsible for the organization of mechanical spaces, storage rooms, loading docks, maintenance shops, and any other operational spaces.

  • Assist with therapy pool monitoring and daily checks.

  • Other duties as assigned by Facility Managers and Facility Workers.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree Required (May be used as practicum to finish degree).

  • Prior experience in Facility operations, grounds, or related experience.

  • Successful experience working in a team environment.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with all team members and customers.

  • Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities including, pushing, pulling, lifting, kneeling, reaching, etc.

  • Must be a self-starter.

  • Must have the ability to meet the requirements of operating a UM vehicle.

  • Must be able to work in inclement weather.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment.

  • Must have a strong work ethic.

  • Understanding of NCAA and Big Ten Compliance rules.

  • Understanding of OSEH Safety Programs.

  • Ability to work nights, evenings, and weekends.

  • Ability to enhance innovation and new ideas with all team members.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience working within a Division I University environment.

  • Experience working with the public dealing with a wide range of customers.

Additional Information

This is a temporary position lasting a maximum of 3 months.

VIEW JOBS 4/17/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-16T00:00 Temporary Grounds Maintenance Technician Location: Water Treatment Plant Starting Hourly Rate: $12.12 (Internal Title: Equipment Operator II) IMPORTANT POSITION INFORMATION This is a seasonal position which will be limited to 6 consecutive months. Seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits. There is a possibility that this position may be renewed on an annual basis depending on the organization needs, funding and employee performance, in accordance with the City temporary worker's policy. Nature of Work: Semi-skilled manual and skilled work assisting tree maintenance crews from the grounds in tree trimming and removal, planting, watering, nursery maintenance, brush removal and other tree related maintenance tasks. Will also operate utility vehicles and large trucks. May exert up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects. Required Qualifications: Minimum of 18 years of age. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. CPR/AED and First Aid certification required by start of employment. Must have a valid Driver's License. If offered a position you must pass the following pre-employment screenings in order to be hired: * Drug Test * Department of Transportation Background Check Preferred Qualifications: Graduation from high school, and some experience in grounds keeping or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of the common practices, procedures, materials, and equipment used in maintaining and repairing park facilities and equipment. Knowledge of the hazards associated with the operation of light powered cutting equipment. Physical Requirements: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions (i.e., domestic and wild animals, confined spaces, heights, mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.), poor atmospheric conditions (i.e., fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation), extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and intense noise. The work often involves the ability to perform routine moderate lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs and occasional heavy lifting up to 100 lbs.
