Description of Job

The purpose of this position is to support the mission of Colorado State University Pueblo by ensuring that the campus, grounds, roadways, and parking areas are safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing to all students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Primary Duties:

Grounds Nursery Maintenance

Position is expected to perform regular daily grounds maintenance duties to include but not limited to: mowing lawns with riding or push mowers; trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, sidewalks and buildings; weeding, thinning and cleaning flower beds and other grounds by hand or utilizing proper tools and equipment.

Applies chemicals used in groundskeeping properly and safely by mixing chemical compounds according to specifications, applying the chemicals properly on grounds and landscapes designated for their use.

Disposes of residual chemical products as directed or storing and labeling them for future use.

Provides a record of grounds and landscape watering and chemical spraying by keeping daily logs of areas watered and duration of watering and the application of chemicals, including areas sprayed, amount and type of chemicals used, substances sprayed and reason.

Campus Events

Assist with grounds and landscaping needs related to campus special events such as student activities and athletic events as scheduled. Effectively communicate with Supervisors and Team Leads to determine the needs of the venue and event scheduled. Check weekly event schedule and adjust irrigation systems and time clocks as necessary for all campus events. Paint and mark athletic fields as needed for athletic events.

Irrigation Systems/Software

Install, troubleshoot, repair, adjust and maintain campus irrigation systems and programming. This includes valves, manifolds, solinoids, sprinkler heads (both rotary and stationary), irrigation piping, low voltage wiring, controllers, clocks etc.

Adjust water schedules as needed for seasonal watering needs using existing software programming.

Work as a team member and assist other grounds associates related to irrigation leaks, repairs and programming of automated irrigation controls and systems.

Operate Grounds Equipment

Operate equipment as needed for projects or repairs to campus grounds. Equipment includes but is not limited to tractors, dump trucks, back hoe, street sweeper, pick-up trucks, tractors, riding mowers, and portable power tools.

Remove or install material such as dirt, rock etc. as needed for campus beautification.

This position will also engage in snow removal and ice melt application through grounds equipment. Employee will work closely with team lead to keep equipment properly inspected and maintained.

Other duties as assigned

Position is required to assist all other Physical Plant and Grounds staff as needed to include other duties as assigned by immediate Supervisor. Employee will be required to work overtime as needed for University functions, special events, or emergency situations that may arise.

Salary Range

$3,484.00 - $4,878.00 Monthly

$41,808.00 - $58,536.00 Annually

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

Additional Qualifications

  • Current and unrestricted Colorado Driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have experience with the RainBird and Motorola/Mottech Water Management system.

  • Experience with heavy equipment as listed in position duties such as backhoe, tractors and street sweeper

  • Experience with large commercial irrigation systems including manifolds, solenoids, low voltage wiring, irrigation time clock programming.

  • Experience repairing and replacing irrigation valves up to 4" mains.

  • Experience mixing and spraying pesticides and herbicides such as select and non-select pre-emergent applications for lawns, flower beds and rock areas.

  • Experience with artificial turf and grooming athletic fields

  • Experience with riding lawn mowers for commercial use.

  • Experience with handheld power tools such as chain saws, augers, trimmers, leaf blowers, parking lot striping machines and drills

Hazardous Materials Exposure

Fertilizers, Fuels and oils, Herbicides, Pesticides; Ice melt

Essential Services Designation (Required to be on duty to perform essential and/or emergency services of the agency without delay or interruption.)

Provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety and welfare of all faculty, staff, students and community members including before and after regular scheduled shift.
