THE DIVISION

The Division of Virginia State Parks fulfills its mission "to conserve the natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the Commonwealth and provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with the good stewardship of these lands, waters and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations" by operating a system of 43 state parks that encompass over 75,000 acres; over 1200 buildings, almost 1700 campsites; over 300 cabins; over 700 miles of trails; nearly 500 miles of shoreline; 36 lakes and ponds; 11 swimming beaches; 4 international dark sky sites, and offers over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

Managed by a full-time staff of 275 and a wage staff of 1000+ during the prime season, Virginia's award-winning state park system boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources including parks in the mountains, on the ocean, on the Chesapeake Bay, on 8 major rivers, on 4 major lakes, 4 rail trails, 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. THE OPPORTUNITY

The Virginia State Parks Sign Shop is looking for a Graphic Designer to assist with design and layout of a variety of sign and decal products for our customers, including state parks across Virginia. The Sign Shop produces between 10,000 and 20,000 pieces a year, ranging from park signage, banners, stickers, name tags, vehicle decals, and more. These products are vital in helping park visitors experience our state parks in fun, safe, and educational ways.

The Graphic Designer will help ensure that orders are completed to meet agency standards and within a timely manner. Duties include:

  • Designing art for all print applications using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop.
  • Communicating with field staff when clarification or proofing is required.
  • Prioritizing work orders according to deadlines and following through to product completion.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
  • Ensuring art meets design guide rules and regulations for commercial standards as well as agency design standards.

The position may also assist with:

  • Performing finishing operations for a variety of products, substrates, and media types including cutting, weeding, lamination, and application.
  • Assisting with administrative services including record keeping, supply inventory, processing of work orders, and shipping.
  • Performing quality assurance checks on printed products.
  • Set up and operation of equipment including cutters, laser engravers, printers, and scanners.

This position will report to the Virginia State Park Sign Shop located within Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield, Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography, print.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office- Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite - especially Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign.
  • Strong Analytical Skills: Ability to review project deadlines and prioritize assignments based on the most immediate deadlines; attention to detail; and project and time management.
  • Prior experience in printing operations and processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work well independently and with a team.
  • Considerable experience in creating vector art.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience with Large Format Printer/Plotter/Laminator Equipment, Laser Engravers, or equivalent.
  • Experience operating and designing for large format printing equipment (Roll to Roll and/or Flatbed).
  • Experience operating large format printing design and RIP Software.
  • Understanding of or experience with commercial branding guidelines.
  • Experience with sign making equipment and processes such as laminators, plotters, decaling, and engravers.

Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check including a criminal history record check.

Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

DCR provides the opportunity for wage employees to participate in tax deferred compensation programs, supplemental disability insurances, and supplemental retirement accounts made available through the Commonwealth's provider network at the employee's expense. As an employee of State Parks, you will also receive:

  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
  • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
  • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
  • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
