Graphic Designer

Job Description:

This position is part of an integrated Marketing and Communication department that leads promotional and internal communication initiatives for Mount St. Mary's University. This person will work within the department and with external campus partners at the Mount to consult and identify graphic design needs, perspective audiences and objectives, and to evaluate current publications for effectiveness and recommend alternatives when appropriate. The individual conceptualizes, researches, creates, presents, and makes adjustments to graphic designs for print and online use. He/she communicates brand standards to departments to ensure consistency in branding initiatives and materials and seeks to maintain design quality standards. The individual creates, monitors, and adheres to project production schedules; reviews printer proofs, performs press approvals, and monitors production of printed materials to completion, resolving any attendant problems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and executes communications strategies for marketing the institution's and assigned academic and administrative departments to external audiences, including the general public, prospective students, donors, and alumni.
  • Creates original artistic concepts and graphic elements for projects including, but not limited to, a wide variety of admissions/enrollment and Institutional Advancement/Seminary Relations and Frederick Campus marketing materials, which includes direct mail, advertising, and the institutions' websites.
  • Conceptualizes, researches, creates, presents, and makes adjustments to graphic designs for publicity and marketing materials, including printed publications, electronic publications, Web sites, other electronic media (video, HTML e-mail), advertising, direct mail, and collateral materials, integrating design across mediums when necessary.
  • Consult with partners at both the Frederick and main campus to identify graphic design needs, audiences, and objectives, evaluate current publications for effectiveness, and recommend alternatives when appropriate.
  • Design projects for academic and administrative units of the institutions and maintain brand consistency across various communication platforms, both print and online.
  • Supports and participates in branding projects from the Marketing and Communication team, the university, and the seminary.
  • Works closely with the Marketing team to ensure that strategic marketing materials are creatively executed and consistent with the institution's brand identity. Will maintain design quality standards for the Marketing & Communication team.
  • Maintains productive, collaborative relationships with campus partners by communicating brand standards to campus departments to ensure consistency in marketing materials and branding initiatives. Creates, monitors, and adheres to project production schedules; communicates routinely and thoroughly with colleagues and managers about work progress.
  • Provides art direction at assigned photo and video shoots.
  • Makes copy corrections, writes technical specifications, reviews printer proofs, performs press approvals, and monitors the production of printed materials to completion, resolving any attendant problems.
  • Manages campus digital sign requests by creating, assigning, and scheduling digital posters that maintain visual consistency and follow brand standards.

Job Requirements: Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, and a minimum of three years of relevant experience is required. Advanced skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, and lnDesign.
  • High degree of professionalism regarding time and cost with the ability to interact, communicate and present ideas with deadlines in mind.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced knowledge of design and branding principles.
  • Knowledge of commercial printing requirements.
  • Ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment with superb attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment while being attentive to detail, accurate, and precise.
  • Knowledge of web, video, and multimedia skills is preferred.
  • Advanced organizational skills and the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and simultaneously manage multiple projects are required.
  • Ability to apply sound reason/analysis to different situations.
  • Desirable Qualifications:
  • Possessing creative flair, assertiveness, self-motivation, and initiative are highly desirable qualities.
  • Ability to lead/teach and mentor others in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate patience and understanding, and handle frequent interruptions.

Annual Salary:

$63,000

(compensation depending on experience, education, and qualifications)
