Performs technical artwork for experiential graphic and exhibit installation elements. Develops elements from concept through production, which are 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional, realistic and decorative, for educational, experience enhancing, wayfinding, and promotional purposes. Researches, designs, writes, illustrates, fabricates, and maintains these elements, in all relevant media. Participates in all the above as a departmental team member and as requested by customer. This position participates in a mandatory on-call rotation.

Design & Fabricate Graphic and Exhibit Elements

  • Create interpretive and non-interpretive art and design solutions for exhibits, guest interactions and amenities, and staff support.

  • Research data and develop interpretive messages and objectives that are in-line with the Zoo's mission.

  • Collaborate with team members, using verbal and rapid-sketch communication, and the work request system.

  • Research materials and equipment, and develop design solutions to achieve determined objectives that are within budget to build and maintain.

  • Assist with the development of project budgets.

  • Demonstrate and develop skills to work proficiently with traditional and innovative artist media, electronic media, and cameras to generate: realistic and decorative illustration and sculpture, graphic design, spatial design, experiential design using dimensional construction, audio, video, and other sensory elements, and presentations.

  • Procure and use materials for fabrication of installations.

  • Produce installation elements, within scope of department's ability. Coordinate production of designed elements with other staff and outside companies, as directed.

  • Work on more than one project at a time and keeps projects within specified timelines.

  • Follow all safety protocols and area SOP's while working construction or repairs with and around. delicate, wild and potentially dangerous animals. Complete required training and safely operate all zoo required equipment for completion of job duties.

Maintains Graphics and Exhibit Elements

  • Ensure all installation elements are current and in good repair.

  • Develop and implement long-range and short-term plans to maintain installations.

  • Manage seasonally changed displays.

  • Complete routine site reviews to inspect departmental responsibilities on grounds.

  • Troubleshoot repair issues, and procure and use materials to conduct maintenance or installations.

  • Use time efficiently to complete assigned tasks. Actively seek ways to streamline processes and stay open to new ideas and approaches. Remain knowledgeable with current design methods.

Manages Files, Materials, and Equipment

  • Participate in the usage, maintenance, and storage of shared project assets, such as images and other computer files, raw materials, and products like signage and props.

  • Keep assets organized, clean, and up-to-date.

  • Notify supervisor of needed computer hardware repairs and software updates.

  • Train interdepartmental staff in the use of equipment, materials, and systems.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation during emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications: Four years of experience in art, design, or a related field. Up to two years of experience may be substituted with education that provides applicable knowledge and skills. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver's license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

Preferred Qualifications: Five years' experience in art, design, or related field. Advanced degree or certification in Arts, Design, or a related field.
