The Instrumentation Department (IO) seeks an individual for a graduate student researcher position in photonics and electronics ASIC system designer to conduct R&D work in design and characterization of a communication system based on silicon photonics technologies and a hybrid electronic-photonic computing prototype. This work feeds into ongoing projects related to instrumentation and infrastructure the Electron-Ion Collider, Noble Liquid Detectors and novel computing methodologies. We invite eligible applicants for this position with the possibility to extend as needed by the project. This position is an on-site position with limited remote work possible. The ideal candidate will be required to design a first prototype of the communication system and the electronic-photonic computing circuits, have knowledge of both the electronic and the photonic processes and particularities, and show interest in both of those fields.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Design and test the silicon photonics data transmission links
Design and prototype an electronic-photonic computing platform
Operate and perform test of data transmission via a silicon photonic link
Operate and perform appropriate tests of the hybrid electronic-photonic computing platform
Work with the broader Instrumentation Department personnel on testing and characterization of devices and circuit component
Contribute to design of ASIC and ASPIC within the scope of the data communication system and the photonics computing platform
Position Requirements:
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of ASIC design process and flows
Knowledge of ASPIC design process and flows
Familiarity with PDKs and CAD/EDA tools for ASIC design
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:
