Description

Basic Responsibilities: This is a 10 month (August 1 -May 31), live-in position that reports to the Director of Housing and Residence Life. Graduate Resident Assistants help the Office of Student Affairs with the responsibilities in supervision of student staff, advising student organizations, developing community, development of educational and social programming, responding to student behavioral concerns, assisting with facility management responsibilities, and administrative responsibilities.

Supervised by a professional staff member, the Graduate Resident Assistant has varied responsibilities in the areas of selection, supervision, evaluation, and training of student staff members in a community ranging approximately 450 residents. The GRA works an average of 29 hours per week; non-traditional work hours (evening and weekend commitments) should be expected.

Supervision

  • Assist with supervision, training, and evaluation of student staff members (i.e. Resident Assistants)

  • Collaborate with the supervisor on the selection and placement of Resident Assistants

  • Attend regular meetings with direct supervisor, and Vice President of Student Affairs

  • Supervise the opening and closing of the residence hall at various points of the semester and assigned vacation periods in conjunction with the supervisor.

  • Assist with the preparation of all requested administrative reports, records, and evaluations promptly and accurately.

  • Establish procedures and maintain an accurate inventory of all equipment, furniture, and facilities within the residence hall.

  • Request repairs from the maintenance office and monitor progress of repairs.

  • Establish and maintain a close liaison relationship with custodial and maintenance staff working in the residence hall.

  • Advise and support students with academic, disciplinary, and personal concerns.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Prior to employment, candidates must be unconditionally admitted as a full-time graduate student at Midway University and be enrolled in courses while employed. If the program is completed mid-academic year, the GRA may request to continue in the role until the end of the academic year.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (primarily Word and Excel), and other department software

  • Trustworthy - able to maintain confidential information as appropriate, for example academic and health records, personal family information, etc.

  • Strong organizational skills - the ability to balance multiple projects and changing priorities without losing focus

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Able to work in a complex team-oriented environment in order to accomplish department goals and objectives.

  • A willingness to help others in the department and throughout the University as necessary

  • Proven record of attendance and punctuality

  • Prior to employment, candidates must be unconditionally admitted as a full-time graduate student at Midway University and be enrolled for a maximum of 6 credits per semester and 6 credits during summer term, while employed.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to provide leadership for staff and students and work as a contributing member of a team.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive relations with students of diverse backgrounds and interests.

Compensation Includes:

Tuition waiver for up to 36 semester hours during the period of employment (A typical graduate load is four semesters -- up to 9 credits each academic year). The student must pay all other tuition and University fees. Remuneration of $12,000.00 per academic year (10 months), paid over twelve months unless otherwise indicated.

Furnished apartment, room, or suite inclusive of cable and internet access and all utilities: valued minimally at $100 per month. Additionally, a reserved parking place is provided.

  • A limited meal plan when dining halls are open valued minimally at $4,800 per academic year. Employment as a Graduate Resident Assistant is for one (1) academic year (Fall-Spring). GRAs wishing to return to the position for a second academic year will be evaluated by the Office of Residence Life before an offer to return is extended. This position may only be extended for one (1) additional academic year.
